When is it time to declutter?

I need help and ideas on how to organize my room, and make it fit me more. I am starting University in September so I want ideas to keep my room organized and cleaned, so messed and when using it wouldn’t be an added stress besides school itself. I would like it if you guys gave me ideas about what I should keep and how I should organize. I will post pictures soon of my room to show what I am working with.

... Read moreDecluttering your room before starting university is an essential step to create a comfortable and productive living environment. It can be challenging to know when exactly to begin, especially if you feel overwhelmed by the amount of stuff you currently have. A good rule of thumb is to start decluttering as early as possible—ideally a few weeks before your move-in day or the start of the semester. This gives you enough time to sort out items without rushing. Begin by assessing the essentials: identify what you truly need daily, like school supplies, clothing, and personal care items. Items that don’t serve a current purpose or hold no sentimental value can be considered for donation, recycling, or disposal. This clear separation helps reduce clutter and organizes your room around your actual lifestyle. Use storage solutions that maximize space efficiency, such as under-bed bins, hanging organizers, and multi-purpose furniture. Labeling containers and maintaining a routine of tidying up daily or weekly can prevent mess from accumulating again. Moreover, keeping your room personalized yet functional is key. Integrate elements that reflect your personality (like photos or artwork) while ensuring everything has a designated place. This balance reduces stress and creates a welcoming atmosphere conducive to studying and relaxation. The keywords identified in the article and OCR text such as 'when to declutter,' 'organize my room,' and 'keep my room organized and cleaned' highlight the importance of timing and methodical organization. Planning and implementing these strategies will help new university students transition smoothly into campus life with less anxiety and more confidence in managing their living space.

I usually start with thinking to myself, ‘have I used this often or is it a one time thing?’ For example I have a whole bunch of hair products but I usually go through 4 products only, so I think to myself if I use it regularly, if no I throw it out (if I have to put my hand in the jar) or I give it to a friend (usually a product that is sanitary and stuff) Usually I find it easier to go through stuff I use on the daily, so my clothing collection, my perfume/ body care collection and then my hair care collection

Well if you are going to live in a room or a dorm definitely think of the space you are using! Plastic storage helps I seen some use it for snacks, clothes, extra school supplies, feminine products etc! If you can hang something over the desk or bed for storage sometimes beds can rotate high in dorms maybe get a door hanger storage of some kind. As for declutter items! If it will collect dust I won’t buy it or use it and get rid of it. Oooh trolley cart comes in handy!
