... Read moreHey everyone! Like many of you, I absolutely love the thrill of finding a great deal, especially in the Walmart clearance aisle. Recently, I spotted an amazing array of bodycare and skincare items – everything from Vitamin C serums to luxurious body balms and even acne face and body scrubs, all with those tempting yellow clearance tags. But as I browsed, a big question popped into my mind: Can a 13-year-old actually use this stuff?
It’s a really important question, especially with so many products out there. For a 13-year-old, skin is still developing, and it's prone to sensitivity, breakouts, or just needing a simple, gentle routine. So, let’s break down some of the common clearance finds I saw and talk about what might be suitable, and what to approach with a little more caution.
First off, Vitamin C and Turmeric skincare, including cream cleansers, gel cleansers, daily moisturizers, face serums, face oils, and night creams, are often abundant. For a 13-year-old, gentle cleansers and moisturizers are always a good start. Products with Vitamin C can offer antioxidant benefits and a little brightening, but sometimes higher concentrations can be too active for young skin. It’s always best to start with lower percentages and patch test. Turmeric is generally mild and used for its anti-inflammatory properties, so it’s usually fine. Collagen, however, isn't really necessary for young skin; it's more for anti-aging concerns. As for face oils and night creams, they might be too rich for some young, possibly acne-prone skin, so look for non-comedogenic formulas.
Next, I noticed brightening body balms with Vitamin C and Caffeine. Body balms are usually just a rich moisturizer, which is great for hydrating dry skin. Vitamin C for the body is generally safe, acting as an antioxidant. Caffeine is often used for firming, which isn't a concern for a 13-year-old, but topically, it's unlikely to cause harm.
Acne face and body scrubs were also on the shelves. This is where you need to be really careful. While 13-year-olds often deal with breakouts, harsh physical scrubs can actually irritate and worsen acne. If using a scrub, opt for a very gentle one, or better yet, look for cleansers with mild chemical exfoliants like salicylic acid (BHA) at low concentrations, and introduce them slowly. Always remember to patch test!
For general hygiene, there were plenty of shampoos and conditioners in scents like Jasmine + Rose Water and Vanilla + Coconut, as well as various body washes (Mint & Yuzu, Cedarwood & Neroli, Peony & Cypress). These are usually fine for daily use. However, if a 13-year-old has sensitive skin or scalp, strong fragrances or certain sulfates can cause irritation, so “fragrance-free” or “hypoallergenic” options are often a safer bet.
I even spotted some men's grooming products, like beard wash, aftershave balm, face wash, and bar soap. For a 13-year-old, a simple, gentle face wash and a basic bar soap are perfectly sufficient. Beard wash and aftershave balm are typically for older teens or adults.
Finally, there were lots of hydrating goodies like whipped body creams and body scrubs (Cherry & Amber, Mint & Yuzu), hydrating shimmer mists, foaming sugar scrubs, and body oil/lotion serums, plus regular body lotions (Peppermint + Cucumber, Vanilla + Coconut). Most of these are great for keeping skin moisturized and smelling good! Just a reminder to use foaming sugar scrubs gently to avoid over-exfoliation. Hydrating mists and body oils are generally safe for adding an extra layer of moisture.
My biggest takeaway? When shopping for a 13-year-old, whether it's clearance or not, prioritize gentle, hydrating products. Look for labels that say “non-comedogenic” (won’t clog pores) and avoid anything with overly strong active ingredients unless specifically recommended by a dermatologist for a particular skin concern. Always do a patch test before introducing new products fully. It's about building a simple, effective routine that supports their skin, not overwhelming it. Happy and safe clearance shopping!
