My Art Progress Over Time! 🕰️

This is your reminder that none of us automatically start out being great at drawing! It takes practice and motivation.

It is also totally normal for your drawings to be inconsistent in quality 🤗 It really depends on the time you spend on it, your motivation, reference, etc.

I am so surprised that even I have come this far. I remember as a kid looking at other people's art and thinking, "How can they do that?!"

... Read moreSeeing your art progress over time can be incredibly motivating, and I’m so excited to share my own journey with you! It's easy to look at amazing artwork online and feel discouraged, thinking you'll never reach that level. But trust me, everyone starts somewhere, and the key truly is consistent practice and a good dose of motivation. My journey from 2015 to 2023 has been full of ups and downs, but looking back at my early works compared to my recent pieces – like the detailed shading on Loki or the vibrant color application on Superman – is a huge confidence booster. I remember struggling so much with basic facial proportions when I first started in 2015. My early sketches were a far cry from the advanced realism I'm achieving now with characters like Scarlet Witch or Homelander. This isn't just about drawing more; it's about drawing *smarter*. One of the biggest lessons I learned, which the original post touches on, is that it's totally normal for your drawings to be inconsistent in quality. Some days, everything just flows, and you create something you're incredibly proud of. Other days, it feels like you've forgotten how to hold a pencil! Don't let those 'bad art days' discourage you. Instead, see them as opportunities to experiment without pressure or to rest and recharge. Sometimes, stepping away and coming back with fresh eyes is all you need. Another crucial aspect of seeing art progress is focused practice. It's not enough to just draw randomly. I found immense improvement when I started identifying my weaknesses and actively sought to improve them. For instance, after seeing my early struggles with getting facial features right, I spent dedicated time studying anatomy and different facial expressions. This helped me move from basic forms to intricate details and expressive gazes, as you can see in my Harry Potter drawing from 2019. Similarly, tackling complex characters like Loki and Homelander pushed my skills in dynamic poses and achieving strong contrast and texture through shading. Don't underestimate the power of references! The original post briefly mentioned it, but I can't stress this enough. Whether it's a photo of a person, an animal, or even another artist's work for inspiration, using references is not cheating; it's learning. It helps you understand light, shadow, perspective, and form. Over the years, I've used countless references to improve my rendering of different materials, from Superman's suit to Scarlet Witch's headpiece. Finally, document your progress! Keep an art journal, take photos of your finished pieces, or even save sketches you're not entirely happy with. Seeing that visual timeline of your artistic evolution – from simple sketches to detailed works – is the best motivation you can get. It reminds you how far you've come and fuels your desire to keep pushing forward. So, keep practicing, stay motivated, and embrace every step of your unique art journey!
