Then Why Did They Get Married

The modern narrative says marriage is supposed to be built on love. That without it the foundation is broken. That a man who does not inspire overwhelming feeling has failed at the one thing that actually matters.

The history says otherwise.

For most of the 20th century, marriage was approached as a partnership first. A pairing built on stability, character, and the practical realities of building a life together. Love was welcomed if it developed. It was not the prerequisite. Three out of four women going into marriage in the early 1960s said as much directly.

What changed was not human nature. What changed was the story being told about what marriage is supposed to provide.

That shift created an impossible standard. A relationship now has to deliver constant emotional intensity to be considered legitimate. The moment the feeling becomes ordinary, something is treated as broken, even when nothing structural has actually failed.

Most men were never told that the standard they are being measured against did not exist for most of history. They were just told they were falling short of it.

Know the difference between what a relationship requires and what a story told you it should feel like.

Drop your thoughts below.

... Read moreReflecting on the history of marriage really puts our current expectations into perspective. Back in the early 1960s, marriage was often viewed as a social and economic partnership rather than a romantic union. As the statistic shows, 76% of women were willing to marry without feeling love initially, embracing marriage as a foundation for stability and shared life goals. From my own experience and discussions with older generations, many recount that love was something that could grow after marriage rather than a prerequisite. The focus was on mutual respect, character, and reliability—qualities that helped couples weather life’s challenges together. This approach fostered a deep bond that wasn’t always flashy or intensely emotional but was enduring. Today, there's significant pressure for relationships to constantly feel passionate and exciting, and when they don’t, many feel their connection is failing. This emotional intensity is often amplified by media and cultural narratives that equate love with thrill and instant gratification. But this perspective overlooks the vital, steady work and commitment that sustain long-term relationships. Recognizing this difference has helped me personally to appreciate relationships for their stability and the quiet support they provide. It’s important to understand that what a relationship needs to succeed isn’t always what a story says it should feel like. By shifting focus away from constant emotional highs to appreciating everyday partnership and commitment, many find deeper satisfaction and resilience in marriage. Ultimately, understanding this historical context encourages more realistic expectations and highlights that marriage can be fulfilling without perfect, nonstop romantic intensity. It’s about building a life together with patience and trust, allowing love to develop naturally over time.
