When I saw this fish, I knew I had to translate its iconic patterns and vibrant colors into an eye-catching makeup look. This 'Moorish Idol tutorial' is part of my journey in creating a 'Tropical fish series pt 2!' (or rather, Part 3 as mentioned in my post!) and I think the color combos really delivered. Getting started with a creative look like this might seem daunting, but it’s all about breaking it down. First, I always prime my eyelids to ensure the colors pop and stay put all day. For the Moorish Idol, the key colors are striking black, crisp white, and a gorgeous sunshine yellow, often with hints of iridescent blue or gold. I began by laying down a bright matte white base on the inner half of my lid. This really helps those other colors stand out. Then, I took a vibrant matte yellow and applied it to the center of my lid, blending it carefully into the white. The trick here is to create a smooth transition, almost like the fish's own gradient. Next comes the dramatic black stripe! This is what truly defines the Moorish Idol. I used a highly pigmented black eyeshadow and a flat, angled brush to create a sharp, bold line extending from the outer corner of my eye upwards towards the tail of my brow, mimicking the fish's distinctive vertical band. For an extra touch, I blended a tiny bit of deep blue or teal shimmer just above and below this black stripe, to give that watery, iridescent feel of fish scales. Don't forget the lower lash line! I extended the black line slightly onto my lower lash line and smudged a bit of the yellow underneath, keeping the tropical theme consistent. A crisp black liquid liner wing on the upper lash line and a generous coat of black mascara truly bring the entire eye look to life, making your eyes the focal point. What I love about doing these creative makeup looks is how much you can learn about color placement and blending. It's not just about copying; it's about interpreting the beauty you see around you. Whether you're going for a full theatrical look or just a subtle nod to the Moorish Idol's colors, remember to have fun with it! These bold looks are perfect for themed parties, festivals, or just when you want to feel extra creative and vibrant. Give this 'Moorish Idol tutorial' a try and let me know how it goes!
