... Read moreThat powerful quote by Eliud Kipchoge, 'Only the disciplined ones in life are free. If you are undisciplined, you are a slave to your moods and your passions,' really resonates with me, especially when I'm trying to get back into a consistent routine. It’s so easy to let motivation ebb and flow, but true progress, true freedom, comes from discipline.
What does Kipchoge mean by 'freedom' here? It's not freedom from work or responsibility, but freedom from the whims of our own emotions and fleeting desires. Think about it: when you're disciplined, you're not constantly battling yourself to hit the gym, prepare a healthy meal, or stick to your goals. Instead, you're empowered. You're free from the guilt of procrastination, the regret of missed workouts, and the frustration of not seeing results. I’ve personally found that when I commit to my routine, like my #StraighteningSummerPlan, it actually creates more mental space and energy for other things, rather than less.
My journey, especially balancing 'mom life,' has shown me firsthand how crucial this shift from motivation to discipline is. There are days when the last thing I want to do is put on my workout clothes or blend that protein shake. But remembering Kipchoge's words, and the feeling of accomplishment after a disciplined workout, helps me push through. It’s about creating habits that serve your long-term goals, even when the immediate desire isn't there. That mirror selfie in the locker room isn't just about flexing; it's a testament to showing up, day after day.
So, how can we cultivate this discipline to find our own freedom? Here are a few things I've learned:
Define Your 'Why': Why do you want to achieve your fitness goals? Is it for health, energy, confidence? When your 'why' is strong, it acts as an anchor when motivation is weak.
Start Small and Build: Don't try to overhaul everything at once. Maybe it's just committing to a 30-minute workout three times a week, or ensuring you have a protein-rich breakfast every morning. Small, consistent wins build momentum.
Create Non-Negotiable Routines: Just like you wouldn't skip an important work meeting, schedule your workouts and meal prep as non-negotiables. My protein shake, for example, is now an automatic part of my post-workout recovery. Having it ready in that clear shaker bottle is half the battle won.
Track Your Progress: Seeing how far you've come is incredibly motivating and reinforces the value of your discipline. Whether it's lifting heavier weights, running further, or just consistently showing up, acknowledge your efforts.
Mindset Shift: View discipline not as a punishment or restriction, but as an act of self-care and empowerment. You're not depriving yourself; you're investing in a healthier, freer future. It's about taking control, rather than being a 'slave to your moods and passions.'
Remember, consistency isn't about perfection, it's about showing up even when it's hard. And yes, as I always say, DON'T FORGET THAT PROTEIN! It's a key part of supporting your body through that disciplined effort. Let's embrace discipline and truly live free!
