I STARTED MY FIRST BUSINESS AT 8 YEARS OLD 🙀

Yes, you read that right. I started my very first business at the age of 8! I was very creative as a child. My favorite thing to make was bracelets! I had so many of them so I decided to sell them. I loaded them up on a stick, walked outside and yelled “bracelets for sale!” to every car that drove by. I remember my very first customer. A beautiful black women who not only purchased what I had on hand, but came back for a custom order 🥰

As I type this I am emotional. Because the girl who had the audacity to get out there and sell her art somehow lost her passion because life got in the way.

But I’m back now! At the age of 29 I have come back to my roots! No website yet, but it’s coming very soon. Thank you to everyone who is supporting and watching me as me and the little girl in the photo reconciles and heals whatever broke in us. Life is always full circle ⭕️.

... Read moreIt’s incredible how a childhood passion, like making those vibrant beaded bracelets, can plant the seeds for a lifelong entrepreneurial journey. When I look back at myself, a young girl in a blue Barbie tracksuit, excitedly selling my handmade jewelry, I see the core of what it means to be a self-employed creator. That early experience taught me so much, even if I didn't realize it at the time – from understanding what people wanted to the thrill of a customer, like my grandma, loving what I made. This early entrepreneurship, sparked by simple creativity, is a powerful foundation. But turning that spark into a sustainable venture as an adult is a different ball game. For many of us who are entrepreneurs or self-employed, especially in creative fields, the passion is strong, but the practicalities can be daunting. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned (or am re-learning!) is the importance of balancing personal and business finances. It’s not just about the art of making; it’s about understanding your costs, pricing your handmade items fairly, and keeping track of every penny. This financial awareness is crucial for anyone aiming for long-term stability. Starting with a clear separation of funds is crucial. Even if it's just a separate bank account initially, treating your business finances distinctly from your personal ones can prevent a lot of headaches down the line. I often reflect on how much simpler it felt selling bracelets on the street, but now with tools available, managing cash flow for materials, packaging, and even marketing is vital for growth. This proactive approach ensures you have the capital to invest back into your craft and scale your operations. Thinking about the future, even at the early stages of rediscovering my path, has become important. How do you ensure long-term stability when your income might fluctuate? What kind of protection do you need for your creative work or your small business? These are questions that every self-employed individual eventually faces. While I'm still in the process of building my website and scaling up, I'm actively researching flexible solutions for maintaining healthy cash flow and considering how to gradually build financial security. It might seem like a leap from selling handmade jewelry as a kid, but the underlying principles of smart business management apply, no matter the scale. This includes looking into simple tools for expense tracking, understanding basic tax implications for self-employment, and even considering how to incrementally save for personal goals alongside business growth. For anyone out there dreaming of turning their creative hobby into a viable business, or even just getting back to that initial entrepreneurial spirit, remember that while passion ignites the flame, practical planning keeps it burning. From carefully costing out each beaded bracelet to investigating how to protect your unique designs and setting up a simple system for your finances, every step contributes to building a resilient and rewarding self-employed life. It's a journey, not a sprint, and every small step toward financial awareness and business savvy is a victory.
