... Read moreHey everyone! I've been getting a lot of questions about how I achieve my furniture makeovers, especially with pieces like my coastal blue cabinet and side table. It's so rewarding to give old furniture a new lease on life, and shaker-style pieces are often perfect candidates for this!
Shaker furniture is known for its timeless simplicity, clean lines, and sturdy construction. It’s functional and elegant, which makes it incredibly versatile. While often associated with natural wood finishes, painting shaker furniture is a fantastic way to update it for a modern home, add a pop of color, or fit a specific aesthetic, like the coastal chic look I adore.
If you're thinking of tackling your own painted shaker furniture project, here’s a little guide based on my own trial-and-error:
1. Preparation is Key (Don't Skip This!)
This is probably the most crucial step! Start by thoroughly cleaning your furniture. Use a good degreaser to remove all dirt, grime, and any oily residue. Then, give it a light sand – you don't need to strip it down to bare wood unless the finish is severely damaged. A light scuff sand with 180-220 grit sandpaper helps the primer adhere better, especially on those smooth shaker surfaces. Don't forget to wipe away all the sanding dust! If your piece has any dings or scratches, now's the time to fill them with wood filler and sand smooth.
2. Priming for Perfection
A good primer makes all the difference, especially when you're going for a drastic color change or if your furniture has an old, glossy finish. I always recommend a high-quality, stain-blocking primer. It ensures your paint color looks true, prevents bleed-through from old stains, and gives your topcoat something solid to grab onto. One thin, even coat is usually sufficient, but sometimes two are best for very dark or problematic pieces.
3. Choosing Your Paint & Application
For my coastal blue cabinet and side table, I opted for a durable, low-VOC paint designed for furniture. Chalk paint and mineral paint are popular choices for their ease of use and matte finish, but a good quality latex or acrylic enamel can also work wonders, providing a tougher surface.
Application: I prefer using a good quality synthetic brush for cutting in and tricky areas, and a small foam roller for larger, flat surfaces like the panels of a shaker cabinet or the top of a side table. This helps minimize brush strokes and gives a smoother finish. Remember, thin, even coats are better than one thick coat that might sag or chip easily. I usually apply 2-3 thin coats, allowing adequate drying time between each.
4. Adding Those Finishing Touches (Where the Fun Begins!)
Once your paint is dry, it's time to bring in the personality! For my light blue corner cabinet and matching side table, I replaced the old knobs with charming nautical-themed handles – anchors and ship's wheels truly tie the whole coastal vibe together. Don't underestimate the power of hardware! If your shaker piece has any decorative trim, consider highlighting it with a slightly different shade or a metallic accent for an elegant touch. And of course, adding some cute mermaid figurines and a small plant on top of the side table or cabinet instantly elevates the look and makes it feel uniquely yours.
5. Sealing for Durability
To protect all your hard work, especially on high-traffic pieces like a side table or a corner cabinet that gets daily use, a topcoat is essential. A water-based polycrylic or clear furniture wax can provide excellent protection against chips, scratches, and everyday wear. Again, apply in thin, even coats.
Transforming a shaker piece with paint is such a rewarding project. It allows you to express your style and create custom furniture that perfectly fits your home. Don't be afraid to experiment with colors and hardware – happy painting!
Love it!
