In addition to the other answers, I shop at places like Aldi and Save A Lot which have excellent prices on items. I can get chicken leg quarters for as low as 39 cents a pound and eggs $2.15 for 18. I also scour the clearance shelves and reduced priced meats. Out of date means nothing to me, but savings. I’ve saved as much as 40% on meats and 75% on canned goods. If you are living OK, doing fine, and you get a raise, what do you do? Nearly everyone I know figures out how to spend the extra money. But they figure the before-tax increase, not after taxes. They spend that, then they can't figure out why they now have LESS money. What I do: Increase my 401-K contribution by the amount of the raise. After a few years, you will max out on that, so put it in an IRA then. Also, if your 401K does not have good investment options (no load index funds) then just contribute to the employer matching limit, then use an IRA.

... Read moreBiweekly budgeting is an effective method to control spending and increase savings by aligning your budget with your pay schedule. Shopping at discount stores like Aldi and Save A Lot helps maximize your grocery budget, offering prices as low as 39 cents per pound for chicken leg quarters and $2.15 for 18 eggs. Additionally, clearing shelves and reduced-price meats offer substantial discounts, often 40% off meats and 75% off canned goods. Items classified as out-of-date by stores can still be safe to consume, providing an opportunity for further savings if handled properly. When receiving a raise, many people overlook the impact of taxes and end up spending their full pre-tax increase, which may leave them feeling financially worse off. A recommended strategy is to increase your 401(k) contribution by the amount of the raise, leveraging tax advantages and promoting long-term growth of retirement savings. Once you've maximized your 401(k) contributions, consider opening an IRA to continue building your retirement fund. If your 401(k) has limited investment options, such as lacking no-load index funds, contribute up to the employer match limit and utilize an IRA for the remainder to optimize investment opportunities. Combining thrifty grocery shopping habits with smart allocation of income increases allows you to enhance your financial stability and plan for the future effectively. Being strategic about both daily expenses and retirement investments ensures that your money works for you over time, helping secure financial freedom and peace of mind.
