Recovery Day Workout | Former Athlete Transition

💡As a former college volleyball athlete, it has been difficult to stick to a consistent workout routine that is self-led. I was accustomed to having a workout plan laid out for me that was broken down exactly into how many sets/reps, weights, and rounds to complete. The transition has been interesting, but I have enjoyed being able to have more control of my fitness goals and having the luxury of listening to my body and it’s needs each day.

💡 This recovery day workout has been great for those days when I need something fast (can complete under 45 mins) and it activates almost every muscle. Feel free to give it a try 💕.

... Read moreStepping away from structured college athletics meant I suddenly had to design my own fitness journey, and honestly, recovery days became a whole new puzzle! I quickly realized that simply pushing myself every single day wasn't sustainable. Those intense workouts often left me with crippling muscle soreness and fatigue – a feeling I know many of you, especially former athletes or those getting back into exercise, can relate to. It's not about ignoring the pain; it's about smart recovery to minimize discomfort and keep you moving forward. One of the biggest lessons I learned was the crucial role of a *recovery day workout*. It's not just about resting on the couch, though passive rest is important too! Active recovery, like a light walking recovery day or a gentle full body recovery workout in the gym, is a game-changer. It helps increase blood flow, flush out metabolic waste, and prepares your muscles for the next tough session. For me, a gym recovery day often involves using light weights or my own body weight, maybe incorporating an exercise ball or even a BOSU ball for stability. To tackle those severe muscle soreness issues that many might face when starting exercising again, proper preparation and cool-down are non-negotiable. Before any workout, I always dedicate time to dynamic stretches – think arm circles, leg swings, or torso twists. These get my blood flowing and muscles ready. After, a proper cool-down with static stretches, holding each for 20-30 seconds, is essential for flexibility and reducing post-exercise tightness. Ignoring this can lead to discomfort and even injury. And of course, staying hydrated by drinking adequate water throughout the day is fundamental for muscle function and recovery. Let's talk about stretching more specifically, since many wonder about the three types of stretches. You have: Dynamic Stretches: Moving your body through a full range of motion, great as a warm-up. Think about Plate Walking Lunges or Side Lunges in a controlled, fluid manner. Static Stretches: Holding a stretch in a lengthened position for a period, best for cool-downs to improve flexibility. PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation) Stretches: Involves contracting and relaxing muscles, often with a partner, to achieve greater range of motion. While more advanced, understanding its principle helps in deeper stretches. When planning my full body recovery sessions, I often include exercises that gently challenge all muscle groups without overstressing them. For instance, light Front Squats with minimal weight or even just bodyweight, DB Incline presses with very light dumbbells, or performing Push Ups on my knees or against a wall. Even simple Rear Delt Flyes with resistance bands or tiny weights can help with posture and upper back recovery. Sometimes, I'll grab a kettlebell for light swings if I'm feeling up to it, focusing on form over intensity. The key, as I learned through my own transition, is to gradually increasing the intensity of your workouts over time. Don't jump straight into your peak performance levels from college; build up slowly. And always, always listen to your body. Some days, a simple walking outside recovery day is exactly what you need. Other times, a quick session like the one I shared with light Side Plate Chops or similar controlled movements is perfect. Recovery isn't a weakness; it's a vital part of getting stronger and staying active for the long haul. Remember, consistency in smart training and recovery beats sporadic, intense efforts every time!
