Who knew there were so many books about magical horse races.
The Scorpio Races I read in the 2010s went dystopian was a big thing and I couldn’t find anything else to read. I was and am still a bit horse girl so I was very excited to see a horse girl book. I remember really enjoying it and really enjoying the romance of the story.
This Dark Descent, I got as an advanced reader copy because again horse book. This one is kind of like the Scorpio races where a normal horse has to race against magical horses. This one is a very dark moody read. You don’t really know who’s right who’s wrong.
Ashlord’s I actually saw in a horse girl book recommendation video and I said I gotta read this. This one is very much more dystopian vibes which I’m typically not a huge fan of, but I liked it in this story.
... Read moreAs a lifelong horse girl, few books have captured my imagination quite like Maggie Stiefvater's *The Scorpio Races*. It's one of those stories that sticks with you long after you've turned the final page, and it truly set the bar for what a 'magical horse race' book could be for me. I remember devouring it back when dystopian reads were all the rage, and it offered such a unique, captivating escape.
What I absolutely adored about The Scorpio Races was its incredible atmosphere. The setting on the windswept island of Thisby in the bleak month of November is just so vivid. You can almost feel the chill in the air and taste the salt spray. The book does an amazing job of blending the ordinary lives of the islanders with the extraordinary danger of the capaill uisce – the wild, carnivorous water horses that emerge from the sea each autumn for the annual Scorpio Races. This blend of reality and myth, often described as magical realism, makes the story feel both grounded and utterly fantastical. It's not just a race; it's a tradition steeped in blood and legend.
Then there are the characters, Puck Connolly and Sean Kendrick. Their journey is at the heart of the story, and their connection, born from a shared love of horses and a deep understanding of Thisby's harsh realities, is beautifully developed. I really enjoyed the slow-burn romance between them – it felt earned and authentic, adding so much emotional depth to the high-stakes narrative. Puck, determined to save her home, and Sean, the quiet, almost legendary horse whisperer, are compelling protagonists you can't help but root for.
For me, the book explores themes of survival, tradition, and the powerful, often dangerous, bond between humans and animals. It's a standalone story, which is fantastic for readers who want a complete, satisfying narrative without committing to a long series. The imagery from the cover, with its dark, powerful horse, perfectly encapsulates the essence of the book: mysterious, wild, and incredibly beautiful. It's a magical horse race story that truly lives up to its name, offering an immersive experience that's hard to beat. If you've been searching for a book that combines thrilling competition with deep emotional resonance and a touch of the fantastical, The Scorpio Races is an absolute must-read. It's the kind of book that sparked my ongoing quest for similar enchanting tales, like This Dark Descent and *Ashlords*, proving that the world of magical horse books is vast and exciting.
