I can’t believe it’s been 10 years

I often find myself looking at old photos – maybe even some of those awkward mirror selfies with my braided hair – and just wishing I could send a message back in time to that young woman with the light jacket and blue top, brimming with dreams and anxieties. If I could, here's what I'd whisper to her. First, I'd tell her to embrace every single part of herself. That feeling of needing to fit in, to be perfect, it's exhausting. The truth is, your unique quirks are what make you beautiful. Don't waste so much time comparing yourself to others or stressing over what people think. The "mature self" you grow into will understand that true confidence comes from within, not from external validation. You'll learn to love the journey, even the messy parts, and that’s a powerful realization. Oh, the drama of teenage friendships and first crushes! I'd advise my 17-year-old self to cherish the genuine connections and let go of the ones that drain her energy. Not every friendship is meant to last forever, and that's okay. Focus on building relationships with people who uplift you, who celebrate your successes, and who are there during your struggles. And when it comes to love, guard your heart but don't close it off. Learn to recognize what true respect and genuine affection feel like. It's a journey of self-discovery, and sometimes the best lessons come from unexpected places. At 17, the pressure to have your entire life planned out can be immense. I remember feeling like I needed to know exactly what I wanted to be and where I was going. My advice? Breathe. It's okay not to have all the answers. Life is a winding path, not a straight line. Explore, try new things, learn what you love and what you don't. Your passions might shift, your goals might change, and that's perfectly normal. Don't be afraid to take risks or to pivot. The experiences you gain along the way are just as valuable as the destination. The world is much bigger and more full of possibilities than you can imagine from the confines of your teenage years. This is a big one. I'd tell her to prioritize her mental and physical well-being above all else. Get enough sleep, eat nourishing food, move your body, and don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Those late nights studying or stressing over small things can take a toll. Learn to set boundaries, say no when necessary, and protect your peace. Taking a moment for yourself, perhaps even a quiet mirror selfie in a stylish restroom, can be a small act of self-love that grows into a powerful habit. Your future self, perhaps in a light green, one-shoulder dress, will thank you for laying that foundation of self-care. Sometimes I look at my reflection now and think about that girl. I truly believe she’d be proud of how far I've come, the lessons I've learned, and the person I've become. It’s comforting to know that even though you haven't been 17 for a long time, the essence of that young woman is still there, just a bit wiser and a lot more confident. It’s a beautiful thing to look back and see your own growth. And if you're reading this and you're not 17 anymore either, I hope you can look back with pride too.
