5 Things I Say No to as a Plant Parent

2/15 Edited to

... Read moreAs someone who has nurtured numerous rare houseplants over the years, I've found that avoiding certain common habits can make all the difference in plant health and growth. One important lesson is to never stick to a strict watering schedule. Instead, I check my plants daily and water only when their soil feels dry, which reduces the risk of overwatering — a major cause of root rot. Another habit I recommend against is mixing your own soil components, especially if you're new or prefer convenience. Buying ready-made orchid or coco mixes saves time and money, allowing you to focus more on care rather than preparation. It's also wise not to leave all plant care tasks for one day, especially with a large collection. Breaking chores into manageable daily routines helps maintain consistent plant health and fits better into busy schedules. Purchasing plants during winter can be risky, as transit and weather conditions may harm sensitive species like Hoyas. Instead, support local nurseries or big-box stores when looking for unique plants. This approach ensures healthier acquisitions and reduces waste. Lastly, using filtered or refrigerator water instead of tap water has remarkably decreased pest problems like mealybugs in my plants. Tap water often contains minerals or chemicals that can stress plants and attract pests, so filtered water is a simple change with great results. Incorporating these five 'no's into your plant parenting routine can significantly improve your indoor garden's vitality and lifespan. Every plant is unique, so observing and adjusting care to suit your collection will yield the best rewards.
