What age did your mom allow you to date?
I saw the clip Evelyn Ortiz shared that when she was just in high school, she was dating a college guy, and the whole table looked shocked. Honestly, Same…
It might sound like just a four-year age gap, but it’s a massive difference in life stage, mindset, and maturity. That’s not 20 and 24. That’s barely-out-of-middle-school and already-in-adult-world.
What really got me was that her mom allowed it??
I know for a fact my mom would’ve shut that down IMMEDIATELY. It’s about power, control, and how easy it is to manipulate someone way younger.
How is this still happening? What do you all think? Would you do that and would your mom have ever allowed that??
Dating during teenage years often sparks debates about appropriate age gaps and parental approval. The concern mainly centers on the vast differences in maturity, life experience, and emotional development between teenagers and older dating partners. While a four-year age gap may seem minor, it can represent very different stages in life—such as being in high school contrasted with attending college or working in an adult environment. Parents frequently grapple with balancing trust and protection. Many worry about the power dynamics that might arise when a much younger teen dates someone significantly older, fearing possible manipulation or undue influence. These concerns highlight why some parents impose strict dating rules during adolescence, emphasizing safety and emotional readiness over age alone. Cultural and personal values also influence parental dating guidelines. Some families might be more permissive, recognizing the social benefits of early relationships, while others prioritize academic focus or emotional development before allowing dating. Open communication between parents and teens about dating expectations can foster trust and help teens develop healthy relationships. Experts recommend that parents consider the teen’s maturity, the nature of the relationship, and the context in which dating occurs rather than merely focusing on age numbers. Guidance on recognizing respectful behavior, consent, and emotional intelligence can empower teens to navigate relationships responsibly. Ultimately, attitudes towards teen dating vary widely and evolve with societal norms. Engaging in discussions about the complexities of adolescent relationships helps cultivate environments where young people can grow safely and confidently while parents stay informed and supportive.
