I Felt Bad for the Kids😢

Last night around 10 pm, when our house was already quiet and the kids were in bed, someone started banging on our front door.

I assumed it was teenagers being stupid, but when I checked the camera, I saw a woman standing there with three small kids, the oldest maybe six. I opened the door and she cheerfully said, “Trick or treat!”

I had to awkwardly say that it already passed Halloween, what do you exactly mean…. She immediately replied, in front of her kids, that they believe my kids probably got plenty and asked me to take candy from them to give to hers because “no one gave her kids anything” during Halloween….. And they decided to make up a new Halloween…..

I felt awful for the kids, but I truly had nothing left to give. She kept pushing until my husband appeared with our huge dog and she finally left. I still feel sad for those kids.

Have you ever met moms like this? What would you have done differently in that moment?

... Read moreHalloween is often considered a magical night filled with joy, candy, and community spirit for children. However, not every family gets to experience this joy equally, which makes the story of the woman and her three kids desperately trying to celebrate Halloween even more poignant. It highlights a harsh reality that some children are left out due to challenging circumstances like economic hardship or social isolation. In situations like these, feelings of compassion often mix with feelings of frustration or helplessness. The visitor's creative decision to 'make up a new Halloween' reflects not only the disappointment of being excluded but also a parent's effort to preserve childhood happiness in difficult moments. While the homeowner felt bad but had nothing left to give, it's a reminder of how supplies of candy can be limited and how unexpected requests can put people on the spot. Reflecting on this incident, many parents might consider how to prepare for such encounters in advance. Having a small set of non-perishable, allergy-friendly snacks or thoughtful alternatives on hand could be a practical way to respond kindly regardless of the situation. This approach shows empathy while setting healthy boundaries when supplies run low. Additionally, this story raises awareness about the broader social issue of food insecurity and exclusion during festive occasions. Community efforts, like neighborhood candy drives or sponsored Halloween events, can ensure no child goes without treats and celebration opportunities. Local schools and organizations might also consider organizing inclusive activities that welcome every family. From a parenting perspective, encountering other parents in tough circumstances on Halloween night calls for patience and understanding instead of judgment. Everyone’s situation is unique, and public moments of struggle can be deeply sensitive. Offering kindness, whether through a smile, a few candies, or a listening ear, can make a difference for both the parents and the children involved. Overall, this touching Halloween story encourages us to be more mindful of others’ realities and inspires creative, compassionate responses. It reminds us that beyond the candy and costumes, the true spirit of Halloween is about community, kindness, and shared joy, even amidst challenges.

I was spanked way too much as a child. Bare bottom with a leather belt. I’d get whipped multiple times over tiny stuff like refusing to eat my broccoli or forgetting to hang up my coat. It never felt right and I’m curious if others went through similar. Personally, I think spanking kids is wrong
