My Core Memory Smell: A Box of Crayons
It’s crazy how one little smell can open a whole door in your brain. For me, it’s crayons—the waxy, warm smell you get when you open a brand-new box.
The moment I catch that scent, I’m back in my elementary school art class, feet dangling off those tiny plastic chairs. I can literally picture my teacher rolling out those big sheets of paper and telling us to “draw whatever makes you happy.” I remember coloring so hard the crayon wrappers would peel off, and going home with rainbow smudges all over my hands.
It’s such a small thing, but every time I smell crayons, I feel safe and young again.
