How To: Twistout on Coily Hair

2024/3/20 Edited to

... Read moreHey curl friends! So many of you asked about achieving the perfect twist-out, especially for us 4B naturals. I totally get it – our hair type can be a bit challenging, dealing with shrinkage and finding that perfect balance of moisture and hold. My journey to defined, long-lasting twist-outs wasn’t always easy, but I’ve finally cracked the code, and I want to share all my secrets to help you get those gorgeous, bouncy curls! First off, let’s talk about why 4B hair needs a specific approach. Our tight, Z-shaped curl pattern means we’re prone to significant shrinkage, which can make twist-outs look shorter or less defined than we want. The key is proper stretching, moisture, and the right product combination. My Go-To Twist-Out Routine for 4B Hair: Start on Clean, Detangled Hair: This is non-negotiable! I always start with freshly washed and deep-conditioned hair. Make sure your hair is thoroughly detangled to prevent knots and ensure smooth twists. Damp, Not Soaking Wet: I find that working on damp, but not dripping wet, hair gives me the best results for definition and reduced shrinkage. If my hair is too wet, it takes forever to dry, and if it's too dry, it’s harder to get those juicy curls. Sectioning is Your Best Friend: For 4B hair, smaller, neat sections are crucial for definition. I typically divide my hair into 6-8 main sections, then further divide each into 2-3 smaller sections for twisting. This helps ensure each twist dries properly and gives a more uniform look. Layering Products: My Holy Grail! This is where the magic happens. Leave-In: I swear by a good leave-in conditioner. Something like the Heaven's Treasure Leave-In Spray is fantastic because it adds moisture without weighing down my coils. It’s light but effective. Distribute it evenly through each section. Styling Cream/Butter: Next, I follow up with a moisturizing styling cream or butter. This adds more moisture and helps with clumping. Gel for Hold: Finally, for that amazing hold and definition that lasts all week, a good gel is essential. I've been loving the Aveda Coily Gel. It provides excellent hold without making my hair crunchy or flaky, which is a common concern for 4B hair when using gels. Just a small amount goes a long way. The Twisting Technique: For 4B hair, two-strand twists are my jam. Make sure your twists are firm but not too tight at the root. Twist all the way down to the ends, ensuring the ends are smoothly coiled around themselves to prevent frizz. Patience is Key: Drying Time: This is often the hardest part! Allow your twists to fully air dry, or use a hooded dryer on a low setting. Rushing this step will lead to a frizzy, undefined mess. I usually twist my hair in the evening and let it dry overnight. Take Down with Care: Before unraveling, lightly coat your fingertips with a natural oil (like argan or jojoba). This reduces frizz. Gently untwist each section in the opposite direction it was twisted. Once all twists are out, separate each curl carefully for volume. Don't over-separate if you want maximum definition! Tips for Long-Lasting 4B Twist-Outs: Prep is Everything: As my image caption said, "Let's prep for a twistout" is vital. Don't skip the washing, deep conditioning, and detangling. Pineapple Method at Night: To preserve your twist-out overnight, gather your hair into a loose high ponytail (a "pineapple") and sleep on a satin pillowcase or with a satin bonnet. Refresh as Needed: If your curls start to lose definition after a few days, a light spritz of water and a tiny bit of leave-in or gel can bring them back to life. Following these steps has truly transformed my twist-out game for my 4B hair. It’s all about understanding your hair’s needs and being consistent with your routine. Give it a try, and let me know how it works for you!
