When I first moved to Japan, I was swept up in the dream, but reality soon revealed some less-than-glamorous aspects. You've heard about the perfection of Japanese trains, right? Well, prepare for frequent train stoppages in big cities. It's often due to "personal incidents," and while the compassion is understandable, it can throw your entire day into chaos. I quickly learned to check apps like Japan Transit Planner or Google Maps constantly and always have a backup plan, leaving a bit earlier for important appointments. It’s a stark reminder that even the most efficient systems have their vulnerabilities. Another shocker was the high cost of moving apartments in Japan. The initial fees felt astronomical – 'key money' (reikin), deposit (shikikin), agency fees, guarantor fees, fire insurance... it adds up to several months' rent before you even get the keys! My advice? Research thoroughly beforehand, understand every single fee, and try to find apartments with no key money or lower deposits. Sometimes, looking through smaller, local real estate agents rather than big chains can offer more flexible options, especially if you're willing to negotiate. The job market also presented unexpected hurdles. I quickly discovered that my previous online job didn't work in Japan as I'd hoped, largely due to visa restrictions or platform availability. Many foreign residents face challenges with online reviewing or gig economy work, as it often doesn't qualify for a work visa, or the platforms aren't optimized for Japanese systems. This led to a period of intense difficulty finding a job that aligned with my skills and visa requirements. Networking, learning basic business Japanese, and being open to different industries became crucial. Don't be afraid to utilize expat communities and job boards specifically for foreigners; they often have insights into companies geared towards international talent. Then there's the cultural adjustment, particularly the feeling of being an outsider. I often felt uncomfortable due to people staring, especially when I ventured outside the bustling, more diverse areas of Tokyo. It's usually not malicious, more out of curiosity, but it can be exhausting. I learned to either ignore it, or sometimes, a friendly smile and a polite Japanese greeting would disarm the situation. Finding expat friends who understood this shared experience was incredibly helpful for my mental well-being. Finally, something I hadn't prepared for was how depressing zoos in Japan could be. Coming from countries with different animal welfare standards, some of the enclosures felt incredibly small and outdated. While there are exceptions, many zoos felt like a relic of a past era. If you're an animal lover, I'd suggest exploring Japan's incredible national parks, nature reserves, or reputable aquariums instead. There's so much natural beauty to appreciate, offering a more uplifting experience than some older urban zoos. Living here has been an incredible journey, but acknowledging these challenges has been key to truly integrating and appreciating all sides of Japan.
