BOOKS THAT HELPED ME UNDERSTAND MYSELF

Understanding the root of your problems can help you find better solutions to combat the issue. Although, you might have a gist of what’s wrong, having a deeper knowledge of how it affects you and self awareness of why you act the way you do can change your whole perception and attitude towards things. It’s important to know truly yourself and have a deep relationship with yourself, because nobody else knows you better than you.

... Read moreIf you're anything like me, you've probably spent countless hours trying to figure yourself out, right? It's a journey, not a destination, but certain books truly act as guiding stars. Beyond the initial spark of self-awareness, I found myself drawn deeper into understanding the mechanics of my own mind and emotions. Two books, mentioned in the original post, really stood out and offered profound insights that I want to expand on for anyone else navigating similar paths. First, let's talk about Ellen Hendriksen's 'How to Be Yourself: Quiet Your Inner Critic and Rise Above Social Anxiety.' This book is an absolute lifeline if you struggle with social situations or that nagging voice in your head. I used to dread social gatherings, constantly replaying interactions and second-guessing myself. Hendriksen, a clinical psychologist who herself lives with social anxiety, breaks down why we feel this way and, more importantly, how to change it. She emphasizes that you already possess the tools to succeed in social settings. It’s not about becoming an extrovert, but about managing anxiety and trusting yourself. The book teaches practical strategies for 'rewiring our brains through our behavior' and offers techniques to tackle the 'inner critic' head-on. It helped me realize that many of my anxieties were rooted in misconceptions and that by gradually exposing myself to feared situations and practicing new behaviors, I could build confidence. It's truly a groundbreaking roadmap to finally being your true, authentic self, as Susan Cain puts it. Then there's Erich Fromm's classic, 'The Art of Loving.' While 'How to Be Yourself' tackles external social pressures, Fromm's work dives into the internal world of human connection and self-love. Before reading this, I thought love was just something that happened to you. Fromm taught me that love, like any art, requires 'practice and concentration, as well as genuine insight and understanding.' This wasn't just about romantic love; it covered brotherly love, erotic love, and crucially, self-love. He argues that most people are unable to love deeply because they lack maturity, self-knowledge, and courage. For me, connecting with this book meant actively working on my self-awareness and recognizing that a healthy relationship with myself is the foundation for healthy relationships with others. It's about understanding that 'love is not primarily a relationship to a specific person; it is an attitude, an orientation of character which determines the relatedness of a person to the world as a whole, not toward one 'object' of love.' This perspective completely shifted how I approached self-care and my interactions. Both 'How to Be Yourself' and 'The Art of Loving' complement each other beautifully. One helps you navigate the external world with more confidence by quieting the inner critic and overcoming social anxiety, while the other guides you to cultivate a deeper, more mature inner world of self-acceptance and connection. Implementing their lessons has been a continuous process, but the clarity and peace they've brought to my life are immeasurable. If you're ready to truly understand yourself, embrace vulnerability, and foster more profound connections, I wholeheartedly recommend exploring these powerful reads.
