... Read moreBlack-owned restaurants in Panama City represent more than just food; they are a vital expression of Afro-Caribbean heritage and culture. These establishments serve dishes deeply rooted in Panamanian history, such as oxtail stew, fried fish, and patacones, each carrying stories of tradition and community spirit. Beyond the enticing flavors, these restaurants play a significant role in fostering social and economic empowerment within the Black community. However, as noted by Javier Wallace, Co-Founder of Afro Latino Travel and Duke University Associate, Black business owners in Panama face considerable challenges similar to those in the United States, including limited access to capital and resources needed to grow their businesses. Despite these hurdles, the resilience and creativity of these entrepreneurs shine through, contributing unique culinary experiences that honor their cultural identity. Neighborhoods like Rio Abajo are key hubs where these culinary gems thrive, often offering no-frills dining that focuses on authentic tastes. Spots such as El Caribe are famed for serving some of the best corvina frita in the city, attracting locals and visitors who seek genuine Afro-Caribbean cuisine. Community support is essential, as local patrons champion these restaurants against negative perceptions, strengthening neighborhood bonds and economic stability. Supporting Black-owned restaurants in Panama City not only enriches your palate but also encourages cultural preservation and economic development. As these businesses continue to gain recognition for their heritage-rich menus and vibrant atmospheres, they enhance Panama’s diverse gastronomic scene and promote inclusivity in the culinary world.

It’s a shame that after all of our contributions to this world, we STILL have to deal with this disrespect from the very same people that enjoy and benefit from our talents and creativity.
