I usually choose to listen to a book when it's not on KU, especially if it's a new author, and due to the mixed reviews I definitely wasn't going to spend money on this one outright. So I started off listening to this on Spotify and I quickly ran out of listening time. And then I couldn't stop thinking about it (like multiple times a day for several days straight) while I waited for my time to renew for the month and so l bought it. And I'm so glad I did bc I ate this up.
Maybe it was because of the mixed reviews that it dampened my expectations, but I ended up really really liking this one. I hadn't read a dystopian since I read the first hunger games in middle school and I actually never ended up reading the rest of the series, the divergent series, or the maze runner series. So this was my first real dip into a dystopian story.
Perhaps my rating is so high be I have nothing else to compare it to, but considering my visceral reactions while reading it I would have rated it a 4 star minimum for the vibes anyway.
Despite that, I found the characters and their storylines, relationships, secrets etc interesting.
The world building wasn't incredibly intricate, but I thought it was thorough.
The parallels and sociology of government was accurate- SIGH I was actually shocked by some of the twists and secrets. I love that I was surprised...like drop the book gasp out loud surprised.
I enjoyed it so much and 'm SO invested in every aspect of this story.
I need Dani Francis to announce a release date bc I'm desperate.
