Free taxi or crowded bus?

Let’s unpack the dumbest question I’ve gotten from guys. I’ve had to explain multiple times in different scenarios: “Why would you choose to ride a packed late night bus when I’d pay for your taxi?” Like, do they really not get it?

Men who’ve never walked through the world as a woman have no clue about the safety math we do every single day. A taxi alone with a stranger at 10pm? No thanks. A crowded bus, even squished next to strangers, it feels way safer. There are witnesses, other people around and less chance of being put in an uncomfortable (or dangerous) situation.

It’s wild how oblivious some guys are to the realities of being female. They see “free taxi” as a nice gesture, but I see a risk I don’t need to take. I shouldn’t have to justify prioritizing my safety over convenience especially to someone who’ll never experience that constant hypervigilance. What’s a question a guy asked you that made you think “do you really not understand how my life works?”

... Read moreOne of the most frequent misunderstandings men have about women’s choices around transportation, especially late at night, is the assumption that accepting a free taxi ride is always a safer or better option. However, for many women, safety is not only about the mode of transport but also about the environment and context in which the ride occurs. Women often perform what can be called "safety math" — an ongoing, subconscious risk assessment balancing various factors like time of day, number of people around, location, and past experiences. When it’s late and the streets are quiet, being alone in a taxi or ride-share with a stranger could feel risky. Even if the ride is offered for free, this doesn’t negate the potential for uncomfortable or dangerous situations that can arise when isolated with one person. Conversely, a crowded bus, despite the inconvenience and discomfort of being packed among strangers, offers multiple safety layers. The presence of many witnesses can deter inappropriate behavior. People around serve as a natural security barrier and any distress signals or incidents are more likely to be noticed quickly. This collective environment can provide women with a sense of reassurance. This safety prioritization by women is not about mistrusting generosity or rejecting kindness but recognizing the realities of gender-based risks in public spaces. It’s a reflection of constant hypervigilance required in daily life — a vigilance men might rarely have to consider. Understanding this helps foster empathy and clears up common misconceptions like why a "free taxi" might not be the preferred choice. Questions posed by men that overlook these realities can reveal a gap in understanding the female experience of safety. Such questions, for example, “Why choose a packed bus over a free taxi at night?” may come across as naive or dismissive because they do not account for the ongoing precautions women take to protect themselves. It is important to listen to and validate women’s choices that prioritize their safety, rather than questioning or trivializing them. When conversations reflect an awareness of these perspectives, it can lead to more supportive, respectful dialogues about safety, transportation, and gender dynamics in everyday life.
