An 80yo lady said this, it’s haunted me for 3 days

This is random but I can’t stop thinking about an 80 something woman I met at Trader Joe’s Tuesday. I was standing in the pasta sauce aisle having a meltdown not cause I’m indecisive, but cause my ex always picked arrabbiata and now I had no clue what I liked. So pathetic.

She was grabbing marinara next to me, noticed my panic, and said, “Honey, you’re allowed to pick wrong. That’s what tomorrow’s dinner is for.” I laughed but she stayed: “I spent 40 years shrinking so others felt comfy. When my husband died, I realized nobody’s gonna hand you permission to take up space. So I just started doing it.” Then she left.

That line’s been looping in my head: “Nobody’s gonna give you permission to take up space.” How many times have I dimmed my opinions, preferences, even my personality to be “easy to love”? She probably forgot me, but she taught me I never needed permission to exist fully. Has a stranger ever dropped a truth bomb that rearranged how you see yourself?

... Read moreIt’s truly remarkable how a simple encounter with a stranger can leave a lasting impact on how we view ourselves and our place in the world. The phrase “Nobody’s gonna give you permission to take up space” strikes a deep chord because it highlights a universal truth about self-worth and personal boundaries. Many people, especially women, spend significant years shrinking their presence, muting opinions, and sidelining their true desires in order to accommodate others or avoid conflict. This often leads to feelings of invisibility and self-doubt. The 80-year-old woman’s wisdom reminds us that living authentically means boldly occupying both physical and emotional space without waiting for validation from others. Her story also touches on the liberating experience of reclaiming oneself after loss or major life changes. Widows or those who have endured significant transformations often find freedom in realizing they don’t need permission to live fully anymore. This is relevant to anyone struggling with societal or self-imposed limits on their expression or choices. If you’ve ever found yourself dimming your personality or suppressing your preferences just to seem “easy to love,” this message encourages reflection and change. You deserve the right to voice your opinions, make mistakes, and take up space that feels right to you. Have you had moments when a stranger’s candid advice or unexpected kindness reframed your outlook? Sharing these experiences can foster a community focused on empowerment and authenticity. In fact, online forums and social media groups often thrive when participants exchange such real-life insights, building a network where taking up space is celebrated rather than restrained. Next time you feel reluctant or uncertain, remember this powerful reminder: you don’t need permission to exist fully—claim your space and embrace your true self with confidence.

Great advice that I wish I learned earlier in my life. I'm in my 50s. If you could learn this in your early years you will have an awakening beyond your imagination.
