After moving into the new apartment and beginning to unpack, I’ve been brainstorming how to approach laying out the decor + furniture, all of the things I’ve collected to help make any place feel warm.
Now that the biggest challenges of moving are over, I’m finally able to work on the smaller pieces of finding everything their new space. The first thing that went up was the calendar; I like the idea of having it right above the light and fan switches, one of the first things someone interacts with once rising from bed in the morning.
From there, I figured out how things would form into their own composition when I placed the rabbit sign slightly up and to the right. The shelves evened out the negative space, and the brown + green + red tones influenced the rest.
In placing all the figures around, sometimes I like to give them a reason for being where they are. The cat on its chair by the payphone instantly created a wonderful story. Sometimes that’s all it takes for a good idea to pop into existence— just a little cat in a chair, and a miniature of a payphone I got from a gacha shop in Japan. Every home has a million stories inside its walls.
[ if my memory is correct: the calendar + keyboard was purchased from Amazon, the shelves + table + display case + artificial plants from temu, and most other things were found in thrift stores 🪑🌻]
... Read moreMoving into a new apartment is such an adventure, isn't it? After the chaos of packing and the actual move, the real fun begins: making your new space feel like *home*. I totally get that feeling of wanting to turn an empty shell into a warm, inviting haven, especially when you're on a budget. It's all about strategic unpacking and finding those perfect little pieces that speak to you.
One of my biggest tips for getting settled is to tackle one 'zone' at a time. Like, for me, getting my bedroom corner feeling good was a priority. It's where I start and end my day, so having that calendar up and those shelves arranged with my favorite finds made a huge difference. Think about what areas you interact with most – maybe it’s your coffee station, a reading nook, or even just setting up a cozy spot for your pet. Making these small sections functional and beautiful first can provide a huge sense of accomplishment and comfort amidst the boxes. Don't feel pressured to get everything perfect all at once; decorating is a journey, not a race.
Speaking of budget-friendly finds, you don't need to break the bank to create a beautiful space. I've had so much success with online marketplaces like Amazon and Temu for essentials like shelves, display cases, and even artificial plants. These are fantastic for filling out space and adding greenery without the commitment of live plants, perfect for those of us who don't have the greenest thumb! And never underestimate the power of thrift stores! Seriously, some of my most cherished decor pieces, like unique figures or vintage-inspired items, have come from thrifting. It’s like a treasure hunt, and each piece has its own story, which adds so much character to your home. For example, my mini payphone that makes a home for a tiny cat figurine – that came from a gacha shop in Japan and it just brings a smile to my face every time I see it. It's these little, personal collections that truly make a house feel lived-in and loved, creating an 'area of comfort' unique to you.
Don't be afraid to experiment with your layout! Sometimes, placing a new item can inspire a whole new composition, just like my rabbit sign did. It’s a process of trial and error, but that’s part of the fun. Adding elements like a 'MAGIC 8 BALL' or a whimsical 'COTTONTAIL CANDY CO.' sign can inject personality and a playful vibe. Remember, your home is a reflection of you. So, whether it's a display case full of figures from your travels or simply arranging your books by color, let your personality shine through.
Finally, consider the flow and function of your space as you unpack. As you pull items out of boxes, think about where they'll live permanently. This helps avoid clutter and ensures everything has a purpose. Even small details, like having light switches accessible near your daily calendar, can improve your everyday experience. Creating an aesthetic that feels uniquely 'you' and also highly functional is the ultimate goal when unpacking and decorating. Happy nesting, and enjoy making your new apartment truly yours!
