Perks of a Government job! 🤌

I LOVE my job, not because of the actual work part but also because it comes with some amazing perks!

For starters I get 12 paid holidays each year! It’s so nice to have those extra days off sporadically throughout to give me a little bit of a reset! We also accumulate PTO and sick leave, depending on how long you work here is dependent on how much time you get but everyone gets 2 weeks vacation a year plus 1 week of sick time and you can also you comp time if you’ve accumulated any!

I also have amazing insurance that is mostly paid! It’s nice knowing I can go to the dr and not be afraid of a huge bill coming! (Especially after having a baby last year!)

We also get a 401k that is contributed to for planning for the future!

The best part for me is my schedule though! I work 8-5 Monday through Friday but I get to work from home on Tuesday and Thursday which breaks the week up so much and allows flexibility in my schedule! And I get to spend more time with my son!

... Read moreIt's so interesting to see how many of you are curious about the perks of a government job! After sharing my own experience, I wanted to dive a little deeper into why these roles can be such a fantastic career choice, especially if you're looking for stability and a great work-life balance. Beyond the specific benefits I mentioned, like those amazing 12 paid holidays and flexible sick leave/PTO, government jobs often shine with comprehensive employer-paid benefits. It’s not just health insurance; many offer robust dental and vision plans too, which really makes a difference for families. The peace of mind knowing your medical needs are largely covered is truly priceless, especially when unexpected things pop up. And let's talk about 401K Retirement! While I mentioned my agency contributes, many government roles also come with traditional pension plans (like FERS for federal employees in the US) or other strong retirement savings options. This focus on long-term financial security is a huge draw and something you might not find as readily in every private sector role. It means you're building a solid foundation for your future from day one. Another aspect that often goes unmentioned is the potential for professional development. Government agencies frequently invest in their employees through training, workshops, and opportunities to advance. They want you to grow within the system, which can lead to a very fulfilling career path. Plus, the sense of public service—knowing your work contributes to the greater good—is a perk in itself for many. Now, if you're thinking, "This sounds great, but how do I even find these jobs or get help applying?" you're not alone! Many people wonder where to start. While I can't recommend specific local centers, I can tell you that a great starting point for federal jobs in the US is USAJOBS.gov. For state and local government positions, check their official government websites directly (e.g., your city's official website, your state's employment portal). Don't forget to look for local employment resource centers or community job assistance programs in your area. These places often have counselors who can help you tailor your resume, practice interview skills, and navigate the application process, which can sometimes be a bit different for government roles. They can also point you to current openings and upcoming career fairs. When you're researching, pay close attention to job descriptions that highlight things like a 40-hour work week – a clear boundary between work and personal life is invaluable! And definitely look for those roles offering Work from home two days a week or other flexible scheduling options. These aren't just luxuries; they're key benefits that can significantly improve your daily life and overall well-being, just like they have for me. It's all about finding that perfect fit where great benefits meet a supportive work environment.

I get all of this, (three weeks of PTO) AND 73 (Accrued) hours -per law in MI- working at a bank. Kinda government ish but not really. Alot of people don't think about applying at banks or credit unions. 7 years strong! easiest job, but allows me to challenge myself. I'm at 24.50 an hour as a high school drop out! (got my GED in 2022) with no student loan debt! lol
