3 Common Gardening Mistakes Beginners Make
Starting your first garden? Avoid these 3 common mistakes that can ruin your plants before they even get a chance to thrive!
1️⃣ Overwatering 🚱
Many beginners think more water = better growth… but too much love (aka water) can actually kill your plants! Overwatering drowns the roots, leading to root rot—aka, plant death.
💡 Fix it:
🌿 The Finger Test – Stick your finger about 1-2 inches into the soil. If it feels dry, it’s time to water. If it’s still moist, hold off!
🌿 Water in the morning – This gives your plants time to absorb water before the sun evaporates it.
🌿 Use well-draining soil – Avoid soggy conditions by ensuring your pots or garden beds have good drainage.
2️⃣ Planting in the Wrong Season 🌦️
Not all plants thrive year-round! Planting at the wrong time means weak plants that struggle to grow—or worse, they die before they even get a chance!
💡 Fix it:
🌿 Know your Planting Zone – Look up your USDA Plant Hardiness Zone (or your local equivalent) to find out what grows best in your area.

Your plants eat through their roots—so if your soil is lifeless, your plants will be too! Weak soil = weak plants.

🌿 Compost is GOLD – Add organic matter like compost, banana peels, and coffee grounds to enrich your soil.
🌿 Use Mulch – Keeps moisture in, keeps weeds out, and protects your soil from drying out.
🌿 Rotate Your Crops – If you're growing veggies, don’t plant the same thing in the same spot every year—it depletes the soil of nutrients.
