Shrimp Dirty Rice Recipe 😋

SHRIMP DIRTY RICE RECIPE:

1 lb hamburger meat

1 lb ground pork sausage

10-12 shrimp, tail off and deveined

4 cups cooked rice

2 cups broth, I used better than bouillon chicken

1.5 cup mixed onions and bell peppers chopped

3 tbsp veg oil, divided

1 tsp seafood seasoning

1/4 cup flour

1 tbsp oregano

3 tsp minced garlic

1 tsp thyme

1 tbsp garlic powder

1 tsp onion powder

1 tsp chili powder

1/2 tsp pepper, more to taste

1/2 salt, more to taste

Pinch of cayenne pepper

Season shrimp with seafood seasoning.

Over medium high heat add 2 tbsp oil and cook shrimp on each side 2-3 minutes until they make a nice 3 shape. Remove from pan.

In a large skillet add 1 tbsp oil and then ground meats. Once the meats begin to brown add in onions, peppers and garlic.

As soon as meat is fully browned add in seasonings. Next add in flour, stirring well. Add in broth and simmer 5-7 minutes.

Add in rice and simmer another 5 minutes or so. Add shrimp back in. Enjoy!

... Read moreI remember the first time I tasted dirty rice – it was at a small, cozy restaurant in Louisiana, and I was instantly hooked! The rich, savory flavors combined with the hearty texture just screamed comfort food. Since then, I’ve been on a mission to perfect my own version at home. Adding shrimp to dirty rice was a game-changer for me; it brings a wonderful seafood element that elevates the whole dish. It's become my absolute favorite way to enjoy this Southern classic, especially when I want something satisfying yet a little lighter than just a meat-heavy version. When I’m making my shrimp dirty rice, I always focus on building layers of flavor. Don't rush browning those ground meats (the hamburger and pork sausage blend is key!). That deep, golden-brown crust isn't just for looks; it adds so much depth to the final dish. And please, don't skimp on the aromatics – those green onions and bell peppers really sing when sautéed properly. I've found that using a good quality broth, like the 'better than bouillon chicken' mentioned in the recipe, makes a huge difference in the overall richness. For an extra kick, sometimes I'll add a dash more cayenne pepper directly into the meat mixture; it really wakes up the palate! One thing I've learned is that while the recipe provides a great base, you can totally make it your own. If you're not a fan of pork sausage, try using all ground beef, or even ground turkey for a lighter take. I've even seen people add cooked chicken livers for a more traditional dirty rice flavor, though that's a bit too adventurous for my family sometimes! For a spicier version, increase the chili powder and cayenne, or even throw in a diced jalapeño with your bell peppers. You could also experiment with different types of seafood; cooked crawfish tails or even diced scallops could be interesting additions, though shrimp remains my top pick for its texture and sweet flavor that complements the savory rice so well. Serving shrimp dirty rice is half the fun! It’s a complete meal on its own, but I love to pair it with a simple side salad to add some freshness, or a warm piece of cornbread to soak up all those delicious juices. For a true Southern feast, a side of collard greens or black-eyed peas would be absolutely perfect. It's the kind of dish that warms you from the inside out, making it ideal for a chilly evening or a comforting Sunday dinner. And don't worry about leftovers! Shrimp dirty rice actually tastes even better the next day as the flavors have more time to meld. I store any extra in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. When reheating, a splash of extra chicken broth can help keep the rice from drying out. Just gently warm it on the stovetop or in the microwave until heated through. It’s a fantastic meal prep option, saving you time and ensuring you have a delicious, homemade lunch ready to go. Enjoy creating your own memorable moments with this incredible dish!
