Sundew Updates

I’ve found that caring for sundew plants, especially the spoonleaf variety, can be incredibly rewarding when you get their environment just right. One of the key factors is ensuring they receive plenty of bright, indirect light—this helps them to produce those beautiful blooms as you’ve seen. I use a south-facing window but supplement it occasionally with a grow light when natural sunlight is limited. Watering is another crucial element. Sundews thrive in consistently moist conditions but hate standing water. I use distilled or rainwater to avoid mineral build-up, watering from the bottom by placing the pot in a shallow tray. This keeps the soil wet without sogginess and mimics their natural bog-like habitat. Humidity is also beneficial, especially indoors, as it replicates their native environment. To maintain humidity, I sometimes use a humidity tray or keep several carnivorous plants grouped together in a terrarium setup. This not only boosts their health but can also encourage more dramatic 'flexing' of their sticky leaves as they catch prey. Feeding can be done by letting your sundew naturally catch small insects or gently feeding it small flies every couple of weeks. Avoid fertilizers which can harm these sensitive plants.
