🇯🇵 3 Things I REALLY Wish I Knew Before Japan

If you're planning your first Japan trip, SAVE THIS✈️

🚆 01 — GET A SUICA FIRST

Instead of buying a ticket every single time you take a train, having an IC card makes travelling around Japan so much easier.

You can generally use it for:

🚆 Trains

🚌 Buses

🏪 Many convenience stores

🥤 Many vending machines

🛍️ Other IC-compatible payments

For iPhone users, Suica can also be added to wallet!

🧳 02 — USE JAPAN'S LUGGAGE FORWARDING

This might be one of my favourite Japan travel hacks.

Instead of:

Hotel → 🚶🧳 → station → 🚆🧳 → stairs → 🚶🧳 → hotel

You can arrange for your luggage to be sent to your next accommodation.

Companies such as Yamato Transport (TA-Q-BIN) and Sagawa provide luggage delivery services.

🐤 Meanwhile, Duckie can travel around with just a small bag.

‼️One thing to remember:

Delivery isn't always instant, and same-day services are only available in selected locations!

💸 03 — DON'T AUTOMATICALLY BUY THE JR PASS

This is probably the one that could actually save you money.

A lot of first-time travellers hear:

“Going Japan? Buy the JR Pass.”

But the JR Pass isn't automatically the cheapest option!!

Before buying, compare:

📍 Your actual itinerary

🚅 Individual Shinkansen fares

💳 IC-card/local transport costs

🎫 Regional passes

🗾 How many long-distance journeys you're actually making

For some itineraries with lots of long-distance travel, a pass can make sense.

Calculate first. Buy second.

📌 SAVE this before Japan.

... Read moreWhen I first traveled to Japan, I quickly realized how much smoother the trip became once I adopted a few local travel hacks, similar to those shared here about Suica cards, luggage forwarding, and checking if the JR Pass is truly worth it. The Suica IC card truly revolutionized the way I moved around cities like Tokyo and Osaka. Not only could I seamlessly tap in and out of trains and buses, but having the card also let me pay effortlessly at convenience stores and vending machines. Adding the card to my iPhone wallet made the process even more convenient, eliminating the need to carry a physical card. It's best to get a Suica card right after arriving at the airport or nearby train stations to start using it immediately. Regarding luggage forwarding, I initially underestimated how liberating it was. Japan's efficient services like Yamato Transport's TA-Q-BIN allowed me to ship my bags ahead to my next hotel, freeing me to explore without lugging heavy suitcases up and down stairs or through crowded stations. I learned to schedule my transfers at least a day in advance, especially since same-day delivery isn’t always available everywhere. This service not only saved me physical effort but also enhanced my overall travel experience, letting me enjoy each destination without worrying about my belongings. Lastly, about the JR Pass — many travelers feel pressured to buy it upfront, but I found that it’s essential to map out your itinerary thoroughly first. For trips focusing mainly on a few cities or shorter distances, individual tickets and using your IC card for local transit can be more economical. The JR Pass pays off primarily when covering multiple long-distance Shinkansen rides. Using apps and websites to calculate your train fares and comparing with regional passes helped me avoid unnecessary expenses. Overall, blending these three travel tips ensured a smoother, more cost-effective adventure. For anyone new to Japan, embracing these practical hacks will make your trip more enjoyable and stress-free. Plus, tapping into local conveniences like Suica and luggage forwarding lets you travel lighter and more efficiently, turning your Japan journey into a truly memorable experience.

ETS JB > KL ETS - what I wish I knew before boarding
Our JB→KL train got delayed 2.5hrs (power supply issue 😩) and they compensated us with one bottle of water. KL→JB though? Smooth, on time, zero drama. Our cousin who takes this train weekly said he’s never been delayed — guess we just got the unlucky run. - Book early! Weekend seats go fast — we
