I Couldn’t Figure Out Which Part of This House Was Real

At first, I thought it was just an old staircase.

Then I noticed the walls.

They don’t look ruined in the normal way.

They look compressed.

Pressed together.

As if parts of different rooms were forced into the same structure and left there.

There are two windows, but they don’t feel like they belong to the same floor.

The staircase still leads upward.

The doorway is still usable.

Light still comes through.

That almost makes it worse.

Nothing here has stopped functioning.

The architecture simply no longer agrees with itself.

Hollow Ground is full of spaces like this—places where the structure remains recognizable while the relationships between rooms begin to fail.

Maybe the house was rebuilt.

Maybe your memory is wrong.

Or maybe two versions of the same place are occupying the same space.
