Call of Duty Wildcards in DnD 5E

Hey fellow adventurers! I’m so excited to share how I’ve been bringing a bit of that Call of Duty tactical flair into my DnD 5E campaigns. Homebrewing these wildcards has been a blast, and it really adds a unique layer to character builds. When I first thought about converting things like Overkill, Prepper, and Danger Close into custom DnD 5E feats, my main goal was to capture their essence while making them feel organic within the fantasy setting. For instance, the Overkill feat, which I designed to let characters wield two primary weapons, has been a game-changer for my martial characters. Imagine a Ranger suddenly able to swap between a longbow and a greatsword mid-combat without missing a beat – it’s incredible for tactical flexibility! And Prepper? That’s for the strategists among us. Being able to secure extra resources or even gain a sudden insight spell feels so right for a character who always comes prepared. My players love how it allows for a more resourceful approach to dungeon crawls. Lastly, Danger Close often comes up in tense situations, allowing for clever use of explosives or conserving critical resources when things get hairy. These aren't just generic dnd abilities; they're designed to enhance specific playstyles. Now, thinking about some of the unique character concepts out there, like a Big Game Hunter, I realized how these wildcards, or even new homebrew ideas, could really shine. While there isn't a direct "Big Game Hunter" wildcard in Call of Duty, the idea of a character specializing in tracking and taking down formidable foes is classic DnD. For such a character, a modified version of Overkill could be fantastic, allowing them to carry a heavy crossbow and a sturdy axe, ready for any beast. Or perhaps a new feat entirely: Big Game Hunter Feat (Homebrew) Prerequisites: Proficiency with Survival skill, Character Level 4 You gain proficiency with heavy crossbows and nets. When you make an attack roll against a creature of Large size or larger, you have advantage on the roll if you spent at least one hour tracking it within the last 24 hours. You can use your reaction to make an attack of opportunity against a creature of Large size or larger that moves out of your reach. This kind of feat adds depth for players who love to roleplay specific archetypes. It’s all about expanding those dnd abilities to fit their vision. Another great example of a tactical enhancement in DnD 5E is the official Alert feat. If you're building a character focused on initiative and never being surprised, Alert is a must-have. It grants a +5 bonus to initiative, ensures you can't be surprised while conscious, and prevents unseen attackers from gaining advantage against you just by being unseen. It’s a fantastic example of a feat that totally changes how a character approaches combat, making them a master of the first strike. While my Prepper wildcard offers a different kind of readiness, focusing on resources and knowledge, Alert is pure combat reflexes. I often find players debating between these types of dnd abilities – do you want to be prepared, or always first in the fight? Both are valid, and both make for incredibly fun characters.
