Wild West × Sonic

It's so fascinating how certain alternate universes just click with existing characters, and for me, the Wild West AU for Sonic has always been one of them! I mean, envisioning characters like Shadow the Hedgehog as an enigmatic outlaw, riding a powerful horse across dusty plains, just feels so right. When I first started sketching these, I really wanted to capture that rugged, adventurous spirit, thinking about the vast landscapes and the challenges of the frontier that these familiar faces would encounter. For Shadow, giving him that classic cowboy attire, complete with a poncho and a revolver, felt essential. He already has that lone wolf vibe, and transforming him into a dangerous gunslinger in the Wild West just amplifies his coolness. Imagining him in various poses, perhaps leaning against a saloon door with a steely gaze or with a gun drawn for a quick draw, was a blast. And of course, no Wild West AU is complete without his trusty steed! I loved drawing him on a horse, adding to that iconic cowboy image and picturing him galloping across the desert. Then there's Sonic. While Shadow fits the 'outlaw' mold perfectly, Sonic brings a different kind of energy to this setting. He's the quick-witted, fast-moving hero, perhaps a bit of a clumsy newbie when it comes to riding a horse, as hinted in some of my sketches! There’s a particular one where he's falling off a horse, realizing he 'sucked' at it, which adds a humorous, relatable touch to his character. But even with a hat tipped defiantly and some classic cowboy boots, his infectious energy and can-do attitude still shine through. It's fun to think of him darting through canyons or trying to keep up with Shadow, maybe even finding himself in some comical situations trying to navigate life on the frontier without his usual super speed. And it's not just the main duo! Bringing in other characters like Amy Rose in an old-fashioned dress adds even more depth to the AU. You can imagine her as a spirited townswoman, perhaps a saloon owner, or even an adventurer in her own right, maybe even wearing glasses for a more scholarly or refined look amidst the chaos of the West. The possibilities are endless when you start thinking about how each character's core personality translates into a Wild West setting. What kind of adventures would they have? Would they be hunting for gold, protecting a frontier town from bandit raids, or simply trying to survive the harsh wilderness while upholding justice? Creating these pieces was such a joyful process. It's a fantastic way to explore beloved characters in a fresh light and push creative boundaries, imagining them in roles like 'outlaw Shadow the Hedgehog' or a 'horse sonic character.'
