Instead of a Redraw, I recolored

When it comes to breathing new life into an older artwork, I found that recoloring can be a powerful alternative to a full redraw. In my experience, this approach allows me to preserve the original composition and essence while enhancing the visual impact through fresh color palettes and shading techniques. For this recent revamp, participating in the Clip Studio Paint 48th Illustration Contest gave me a wonderful opportunity to explore themes close to my heart—such as Black women, African goddesses, and the moon goddess energy. Taking this route helped me think more deeply about color symbolism and how it relates to culture and identity. For instance, selecting rich earth tones and vibrant hues helped me evoke a sense of divine feminine energy that resonates with heritage and spirituality. The challenge was to ensure the recolor honored the original work’s integrity while giving it a modern and compelling feel. I used layers to experiment with different lighting effects and color contrasts without losing the details that made the piece special. From a technical standpoint, using Clip Studio Paint’s versatile brush sets and texture options made the process smoother and more enjoyable. I paid close attention to skin tones and highlights to celebrate the natural beauty of Black women authentically. Adding subtle glows and shadow variations helped emphasize the mystical and powerful aura of the African goddess and moon goddess inspirations.
