Neuro_Nuts: Goth PhD Student with 6 Rats
As a PhD student deeply involved in neuroscience research, I’ve found working with rats to be both challenging and rewarding. Rats serve as valuable models for studying brain activity rhythms, which are crucial for understanding neurological disorders. At my lab, we utilize electrophysiological analysis to distinguish different neuronal patterns, which helps us decode the complexities of brain function. One fascinating aspect of this research involves examining mosaic and homogeneous electrophysiology in organoid models. These models mimic brain tissue and enable us to differentiate between various mutations associated with disorders such as Rett Syndrome. By analyzing pairwise distances and neuron cluster phenotypes, we gain a deeper understanding of how mutations affect brain connectivity and behavior. Balancing my goth identity with scientific rigor has been an empowering experience. It challenges stereotypes and brings a creative edge to my analytical work. Engaging with six rats daily allows me a unique perspective on animal behavior and neurological health, also teaching me patience and observation.
