Fried green tomatoes 🍅
Fried green tomatoes are a classic Southern dish that not only taste delicious but also bring a wonderful tangy flavor that’s different from ripe tomatoes. When making them at home, I found that the key is to choose firm, unripe green tomatoes that can hold their shape during frying. If the tomatoes are too soft, they tend to become mushy instead of crispy. Before frying, I slice the tomatoes about a quarter-inch thick and season them lightly with salt and pepper. For an extra crispy crust, dipping the slices first in buttermilk and then in a mixture of cornmeal and flour adds great texture and flavor. A pinch of cayenne pepper in the batter gives a subtle kick without overpowering the tomato’s natural tartness. When frying, it’s important to use enough oil to cover at least half the tomato slice and maintain a medium heat—too hot, and the crust burns before the inside cooks; too low, and the slices soak up excess oil. Typically, frying for about 3 minutes on each side until golden brown works well. I like to serve fried green tomatoes with a creamy remoulade or a simple garlic aioli. They also pair nicely with fresh herbs like basil or parsley to add freshness. Overall, fried green tomatoes make a fantastic appetizer, snack, or side dish that’s surprisingly easy to make and sure to impress anyone who tries them.
