Weird Mindset I Picked Up in Sales Consulting

When I was first growing my business, I worked as an inside sales consultant for a popular construction company for one year. A job like this is known to be highly stressful with its high turnover rate. During our 4-week training period, one trainer gave us advice that resonates with me long after I left: Think like a gold fish.

Essentially, this trainer was telling us that no matter how our previous call ended, keep moving forward as if it did not happen. Making 300+ phone calls each day to contractors who did not want to be on the phone, especially with a sales person, I was met with a lot of quick hang ups, annoyed responses, or worse. So, it was important that I didn't carry the bad energy from my previous call which could interfere with my next call that could lead to a sale.

Ultimately, what our trainer was trying to instill in us was the importance of repetition. The idea was that the more we repeated an action, the more we would learn from our mistakes as we build momentum. And so, if we were consistent with our efforts without becoming bogged down by our previous failed calls, we would build on our skills which would eventually get us to that sale.

I still keep this in mind today whenever I'm overthinking something I see as challenging or am afraid of failing at a goal I want to achieve. What's something you learned from your workplace?

... Read moreIn the high-stakes realm of sales consulting, particularly in industries like construction where rejection rates are high, maintaining mental resilience is crucial for success. The concept of the "goldfish mindset" is an effective approach to managing the emotional toll of repeated rejection. This mindset encourages sales professionals to quickly let go of negative experiences from previous calls and maintain a forward-focused attitude. Research in sales psychology emphasizes the power of repetition and emotional detachment to build skills and enhance performance. By making hundreds of calls daily, sales consultants face frequent quick hang-ups and annoyed responses. Allowing these experiences to accumulate emotionally can lead to burnout and decreased motivation. The goldfish metaphor — having a short memory span — promotes forgetting failures and not carrying negative energy into subsequent interactions. Consistency in effort is another critical factor in this process. Each call represents an opportunity to learn, improve one’s pitch, and build rapport with potential clients. Over time, this repetition leads to developing refined skills and better increasing the chances of closing sales. Mental toughness, supported by strategies like mindfulness or stress management techniques, can further empower salespeople to sustain this approach. Moreover, applying lessons learned from sales training to other professional or personal challenges can improve resilience and goal achievement. This mindset can help individuals overcome fear of failure by encouraging them to view setbacks as temporary and non-defining events. Overall, adopting the goldfish mindset is not only useful for inside sales consultants but also for anyone facing frequent rejection or challenges in high-pressure roles. It facilitates consistent performance, emotional stability, and sustained motivation essential for long-term success.
