... Read moreHave you ever seen someone move from one intense relationship to another, declaring each new person their 'soulmate' with lightning speed? It's a pattern often associated with narcissism, driven by an inability to truly be alone with their own deep-seated emptiness. This quote really resonated with me: "Nobody finds a 'soulmate' faster than a narcissist who can't be alone with their own emptiness." It perfectly captures why they operate the way they do, constantly seeking external validation to fill a void. So, what does it mean to 'don't feed the narcissist,' especially when their entire existence seems to revolve around being fed? 'Feeding the narcissist' isn't about literal food; it's about providing them with narcissistic supply. This supply can come in many forms: attention, admiration, fear, drama, anger, pity, or any strong emotional reaction from you. When you react to their provocations, try to reason with them, or constantly seek their approval, you're essentially giving them the fuel they crave. Their rapid 'soulmate' declarations are just another way to secure a new, fresh source of this supply, to distract themselves from their internal void. The key to not feeding them lies in understanding their motives and changing your own responses. Here are some practical ways I've learned to starve a narcissist of their supply: Go Gray Rock: This method involves becoming as uninteresting and unreactive as possible. Imagine yourself as a dull, gray rock. When they try to provoke you, respond with neutral, factual answers. Don't show emotion, don't argue, don't explain. For example, if they say, "You're always late!" instead of defending yourself, you might simply say, "Okay." or "I'll keep that in mind." The goal is to make engaging with you boring and unproductive for them. Implement No Contact or Low Contact: This is often the most effective, albeit challenging, strategy. If possible, go completely No Contact – block them on all platforms, avoid shared spaces, and have no communication. If No Contact isn't feasible (e.g., co-parenting or workplace), practice Low Contact. Keep interactions minimal, strictly business-like, and focus only on the essential topics. The less access they have to you, the less they can extract supply. Set and Enforce Boundaries: Narcissists see boundaries as challenges to be overcome. It's crucial to set clear, firm boundaries and stick to them. Don't explain your boundaries; state them clearly and enforce them. "I will not discuss this further," or "If you speak to me that way, I will end the call." Then follow through. They thrive on testing limits, so consistency is vital. Don't Explain, Just Act: Narcissists love to twist your words and use your explanations against you. Instead of trying to make them understand your feelings or perspectives (which they rarely can or will), simply act. If you decide not to attend an event because they'll be there, you don't need to justify it. Simply say, "I won't be able to make it." Focus on Emotional Detachment: This takes practice, but learning to detach emotionally from their drama is powerful. Realize that their actions and words are often a reflection of their own internal struggles and not a true reflection of you. Don't internalize their criticisms or get caught up in their emotional games. Your emotional peace is paramount. Understanding that a narcissist's quick attachment to a 'soulmate' is a desperate attempt to avoid their own internal emptiness empowers you to see through their facade. By withholding the supply they desperately need, you reclaim your power and begin the crucial journey of healing and protecting your own well-being. It's not easy, but starving the narcissist is essential for your freedom.
