Lead Yourself the Way You Lead Others

Most of us are incredible leaders for everyone else—but ruthless with ourselves. Real leadership starts internally. When you replace constant self-criticism with self-compassion, you don’t lose your edge—you gain resilience, clarity, and consistency. The way you talk to yourself becomes the culture you live in.

... Read moreIn my personal journey as a leader, I found that the way I treat myself sets the tone for everything else. Initially, I believed that being hard on myself was essential to maintain high standards and sharp focus. However, this often led to increased stress and burnout, which eventually impacted my ability to lead others effectively. It wasn’t until I learned about self-compassion that things began to shift. One powerful approach I adopted was to treat myself like a teammate rather than a critic. When I made mistakes or felt stuck, instead of berating myself, I asked, "What kind words would I offer a friend in this situation?" This simple mindset shift transformed my internal dialogue from harsh judgment to supportive encouragement. Incorporating practices such as mindfulness helped me become aware of my feelings without exaggeration or suppression, allowing me to acknowledge frustration calmly. For instance, placing a hand on my heart and taking slow, deep breaths served as physical cues to soothe my stress response, signaling safety to my brain. This mindful self-compassion not only reduced anxiety but also improved my clarity and consistency in decision-making. Moreover, understanding that mistakes are a universal part of being human helped me connect with others on a deeper level, fostering empathy and emotional intelligence in my leadership style. By reframing setbacks as learning opportunities, I noticed a boost in my resilience and motivation, rather than a decline. Adopting self-compassion hasn’t made me complacent; quite the opposite. It has fueled my leadership with greater endurance, optimism, and the ability to nurture a positive culture—starting from within. If you’re looking to strengthen your leadership, I encourage you to lead yourself the way you lead others, with kindness, patience, and support. It’s a transformative practice that cultivates not just personal growth but also encourages a thriving environment in your team.
