3 Things I wish I knew before I read This book👇

I didn’t know I had trauma until I read this book.

Not the “obvious” kind. No one hit me. Nothing made the headlines.

But I was anxious, on edge, easily overwhelmed. I thought something was wrong with me.

Then I read The Body Keeps the Score — and everything made sense.

This book showed me how trauma isn’t just in your mind.

It lives in your body.

In how you breathe, how you freeze, how you react without knowing why.

It explained why I always felt unsafe—even in safe places.

Why I flinched emotionally from closeness.

Why I felt so far from myself.

But it also gave me hope. Real, practical hope.

That healing is possible. That my body isn’t my enemy. That my nervous system just needed help.

📚 If you’ve ever wondered, “Why am I like this?”

This book might just answer it.

... Read moreWhen I first picked up *The Body Keeps the Score*, I wasn't expecting it to be a roadmap to my own hidden anxieties. Like many, I associated trauma with dramatic, overt events. But what I learned, and what truly resonated, was that trauma isn't just what happened; it can also be the subtle, prolonged absence of care, safety, or love. This insight alone was revolutionary for me. I started seeing my chronic feelings of being on edge, my inexplicable moments of overwhelm, not as personal failings, but as echoes of past experiences I hadn't even consciously registered as traumatic. It was like a lightbulb switched on, illuminating connections I'd never made before. The book profoundly explains how the body remembers what the mind forgets. For years, I just thought my tight shoulders and persistent anxiety were 'just me,' part of my personality. Bessel van der Kolk's work helped me understand these weren't random quirks but physical symptoms of a nervous system stuck in a state of chronic alert. It was a huge relief to finally have language for unexplained feelings and to begin reducing self-blame. This wasn't about a lack of willpower or strength; it was about biology and deeply ingrained, learned responses within my very physiology. Understanding this was the first step towards truly addressing it. Another crucial takeaway was that you can't just 'think your way out' of trauma. This was a hard pill to swallow for someone who relies heavily on intellectual understanding and problem-solving through thought. The book emphasizes that healing from trauma involves movement, safety, and body-based work beyond talk therapy. This shifted my focus from endless introspection to more somatic practices – things like conscious breathing exercises, gentle movement, creating a sense of physical safety in my environment, and even exploring practices like yoga or dance. It's about retraining your nervous system, not just your thoughts, and reconnecting with your body in a compassionate way. For those curious about the physical copy, I often get questions about the book's appearance. While the transformative content is paramount, the design, including details perhaps even by a specific cover artist, does contribute to its presence and how it draws you in on a bookshelf. It's interesting how many people are drawn to not just the powerful words but the entire package of such a significant work – a testament to its impact. Ultimately, The Body Keeps the Score was a lifeline for me. It provided validation and a framework for understanding experiences that had long felt isolating and confusing. If you’ve ever felt 'broken' or wondered why you're 'reacting 'too much' to everyday situations, feeling overwhelmed by seemingly small stressors, I truly believe this book offers profound insights and, most importantly, practical hope. It doesn't just diagnose; it illuminates a clear, evidence-based path forward for profound personal healing and self-discovery. It's a challenging read, yes, but an incredibly rewarding one that offers a deeper understanding of ourselves and the invisible scars we carry.
