Ticks love warm, hidden spots on the body, so I always carefully examine areas such as behind the ears, the back of the neck, under the arms, the diaper region, and any snug clothing areas like waistbands or sock tops. It’s important to do these checks every evening, especially if your child has been playing outside in grassy or wooded areas where ticks are common. When you find a tick, try to remove it promptly and properly using fine-tipped tweezers or a specialized tick removal tool. Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull upward steadily without twisting to reduce the risk of leaving parts embedded. After removal, placing the tick in a sealed container or bag is helpful in case you need to show it to your pediatrician. Monitor your child for any unusual symptoms near the bite site, such as rashes—especially a bullseye pattern—fever, irritability, or flu-like symptoms. These may indicate Lyme disease or other infections transmitted by ticks and warrant medical attention. In our experience, being diligent with these daily tick checks and knowing the signs to watch for has made all the difference in ensuring a safe and worry-free summer. Taking time for this simple routine is a small investment for your child’s health and comfort during tick season.
