You can also slightly bend the tops of a few rolls inwards to create a smaller opening. Advanced: Introduce crumpled paper or small, soft objects, like a yellow toy ball, into some of the rolls along with the treats. This makes them really have to dig and manipulate objects to get their reward. For the ultimate challenge, you could even create a "DIY cat maze" by cutting holes in a larger box and connecting smaller boxes or cardboard tubes to create a multi-chambered treat hunt. It’s amazing what you can do with a few cardboard tubes and a little creativity! A few tips for success with your new DIY cardboard cat puzzle toy: Introduce it gradually: Let your cat explore the box without treats first. Then, put a few treats where they're easy to get to build confidence. Choose the right treats: Small, high-value treats that don't crumble too much are best. Freeze-dried chicken or those fish-shaped treats work perfectly. Supervise initially: Just to make sure your cat isn't trying to eat the cardboard (though most are only interested in the treats!). Rotate toys: Don't leave the puzzle box out all the time. Bring it out a few times a week to keep it novel and exciting.
