Best Shoulder Exercises
Hey Lemon8 fam! So many of you ask about building those strong, rounded shoulders, and trust me, it’s not as complicated as it seems. After years in the gym, I’ve found that you really only need a few key movements to build well-developed shoulders. Forget endless exercises; I’m spilling my secret on the ONLY THREE EXERCISES I swear by for my shoulder routine. These aren't just random picks; they specifically target all three heads of your deltoids for that sculpted look. First up, we tackle a pressing variation – this is crucial for overall shoulder mass and strength, hitting both your FRONT AND SIDE DELTS hard. My go-to is the standing overhead dumbbell press. Here’s how I nail it: Grab a pair of dumbbells and stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, core tight. Hold the dumbbells at shoulder height, palms facing forward, elbows tucked slightly. Press the dumbbells straight overhead until your arms are fully extended but not locked. Slowly lower them back to the starting position, maintaining control. I aim for 3-4 sets of 8-12 reps. Focus on a full range of motion and really feel those front delts working. This exercise is fantastic for building shoulder strength and that impressive upper shoulder look! NEXT IS ANY raise variation, specifically for isolating that side delt. While free weights are great, I prefer to use machines for lateral raises as it ADDS STABILITY and allows me to truly TARGET YOUR SIDE DELT without worrying about swinging or using momentum. Sit on the lateral raise machine, adjusting the pads so they rest against the outside of your upper arms. Keep your chest up and core engaged. Slowly raise your arms out to the sides, leading with your elbows, until they're parallel with your shoulders. Imagine pouring water from a jug. Hold momentarily at the top, squeezing your side delts. Control the movement as you lower the weight back down. I typically do 3 sets of 12-15 reps, sometimes even a drop set for an extra burn. This really helps create that wider, more rounded shoulder appearance. And finally, we can't forget YOUR REAR DELT! These are often neglected but are vital for balanced shoulder development, posture, and preventing injuries. For this, I love reverse pec deck flyes or bent-over reverse flyes with dumbbells. For the reverse pec deck, sit facing the machine with your chest against the pad, handles extended in front of you. With a slight bend in your elbows, pull the handles out to the sides, squeezing your shoulder blades together. Control the return to the starting position. If using dumbbells, hinge at your hips with a slight bend in your knees, letting the dumbbells hang. Raise them out to the sides, leading with your elbows, keeping your back flat. I usually hit 3 sets of 12-15 reps here. It’s amazing how much difference focusing on your rear delts makes for the overall aesthetic and strength of your shoulders. Consistency is key, along with proper form. These three exercises are a game-changer for anyone looking to build strong, well-developed shoulders in the gym. Give this routine a try and let me know how it goes!
