petty or just fair?

So my friend always does this thing where she flakes on plans last minute, leaves my messages on read, and only hits me up when she needs something.

I finally got fed up… and started treating her the same way.

Didn’t respond right away. Cancelled on her last minute. Gave dry energy. And suddenly she’s acting all hurt and confused like I’m the bad guy.

But isn’t that exactly what she’s been doing to me?

Am I being petty or just matching energy at this point?

... Read moreDealing with unbalanced friendships where one person consistently flakes on plans, ignores messages, or only reaches out for favors can be emotionally draining. This dynamic often leads to feelings of resentment, confusion, and questioning one's own reactions. A key question arises: when does equaling a friend's behavior become justifiable self-protection rather than petty retaliation? When a friend repeatedly leaves messages unread or cancels plans last minute, it signals a lack of respect and consideration. Responding with similar behaviors—delaying responses, canceling plans, or offering minimal engagement—may appear to some as petty, but it can also serve as a boundary-setting mechanism. This approach forces the friend to confront their actions by mirroring the energy they project. However, it's important to reflect on the motives behind these reactions. If the goal is to communicate hurt feelings and encourage change, communicating openly and honestly about concerns could be more effective and mature than simply reciprocating negative behavior. Addressing issues directly promotes clarity and can preserve the relationship without escalating conflicts. In some cases, what seems like being petty might actually be protecting one’s emotional well-being. Healthy friendships require mutual respect, openness, and reliability. When these are absent, evaluating whether the friendship is worth maintaining is crucial. Setting clear boundaries and deciding not to engage in harmful behavior contributes to self-care. The phrase from the image "am I wrong for giving her a taste of her own medicine?" captures the dilemma of balancing self-respect with kindness. Ultimately, while matching negative energy can be temporarily satisfying, long-term solutions involve honest conversations and setting healthy limits to nurture connections based on trust and respect. Understanding this balance is essential in navigating friendship drama and protecting your emotional health without crossing into petty behavior. Exploring community advice or professional guidance can also provide strategies tailored to individual situations.

You’re not being petty—you’re setting a boundary in the only language she seems to understand. Matching energy isn’t revenge; it’s protecting your peace. If she can’t handle being treated the way she treats you, that says everything about the friendship.

She kinda deserves to know what it feels like to be treated like that
