When your baby’s nap schedule decides

This year, we decided to host Thanksgiving at our house. I have a 4-year-old and a 5-month-old, so having it here just made sense with nap schedules and all the chaos that comes with a baby. My husband’s sister has always hosted in the past, and I thought it’d be fine to get a takeout turkey dinner from a local restaurant (we’ve done it before during COVID, and honestly, it was amazing).

I even offered to let my sister make our late grandmother’s stuffing so some tradition stayed alive. She and her family decided to stay home this year because they like the full home-cooked experience and the kids love helping, which I get.

But now I find out she’s upset that my parents are coming to our house and that we didn’t “check in” with her first. Apparently, takeout doesn’t count as “hosting” in her book, and having a baby who naps apparently doesn’t matter. I just wanted a low-stress Thanksgiving that worked for our little family and kept everyone comfortable.

I feel like we’re being judged for trying to make it work with a baby in the house. Can anyone else relate to hosting holidays with young kids and having to bend the “rules” of tradition?

... Read moreHosting Thanksgiving with a baby can definitely add a new layer of challenges to the holiday planning. Babies have their own schedules, especially when it comes to naps, and that often means parents need to adapt traditional celebrations to keep things running smoothly. Choosing to go with takeout turkey instead of making everything from scratch is a smart way to reduce stress and have more time to focus on family and the little ones’ needs. It's important to remember that every family celebrates differently, and bending the "rules" of tradition is more common than you might think, especially with young children involved. Some family members might feel strongly about home-cooked meals or the way hosting is done, but ultimately the goal should be to keep everyone comfortable and happy. This sometimes means compromising or setting new boundaries, like deciding who can come over and when. Communication is key to avoiding misunderstandings. While your sister might prefer the full home-cooked experience, explaining your reasons clearly — prioritizing your baby’s nap schedule and your desire for a low-stress day — can help ease tensions. Also, including family in smaller ways, like sharing a beloved stuffing recipe, keeps some tradition alive without the full burden of hosting. Takeout meals can be both delicious and convenient, especially when parents are caring for both toddlers and infants. Many local restaurants now offer fantastic Thanksgiving options that maintain the holiday spirit but free up valuable time for parents to enjoy the day themselves. In the end, hosting with a baby means creating a holiday that works for your family’s current needs. Traditions can evolve and new memories can be made while honoring what matters most — love, comfort, and togetherness. If you’re feeling judged or pressured, try to focus on what makes your family happiest and remember you’re not alone. Many parents find themselves redefining the holidays in ways that fit their growing family dynamic, and that’s perfectly okay.

I think it’s because when people offer to host, they don’t expect takeout. Especially for a holiday. It kind of feels like you offered to host for convenience but then didn’t want to do anything. Which I totally get as a mom too. But when offering to host, you’re taking up all those responsibilities. I personally wouldn’t have just stayed home like your SIL, but I’d be disappointed without takeout on Thanksgiving too.

I don’t have children but this sounds like an stress-free thanksgiving. Yeah it’s nice to keep the home-cooked meals tradition but you do what you can when you have young children to attend to. Anyways, cooking a turkey is difficult.
