I used to say “I feel like I’m allergic to life”
Now it makes sense that it’s histamine intolerance.
Everyone’s experience and symptoms can be different, this is just mine!
After learning about histamine intolerance, I was surprised it took 15 years for a doctor to recommend testing my histamine levels, despite having allergic reactions since high school.
I was also surprised to learn that some foods and drinks contain histamine, and that my body doesn’t process them well (at least for now).
Histamine intolerance can be a confusing and frustrating condition to live with, especially when symptoms mimic other allergies or chronic health issues. From my personal experience, one of the hardest parts was the delay in diagnosis—it took over a decade before my histamine levels were tested, despite persistent allergic reactions since high school. This delay is common, as histamine intolerance is not widely recognized, and its symptoms can vary greatly between individuals. Certain foods can cause a surge in histamine or block the enzymes responsible for breaking it down, leading to flare-ups. For me, histamine-rich foods like aged cheeses, cured meats, and wine often triggered reactions such as swollen lips, facial flushing, rashes with itchy bumps, and even intense anxiety that felt resistant to SSRIs or meditation. Sleep disruptions became frequent, with nights varying from terribly short to restless despite long hours in bed. Managing this condition required a careful balance—slowly identifying which foods and drinks were triggers and adjusting my diet accordingly. It also meant educating doctors and loved ones about histamine intolerance and advocating for myself during medical consultations. While each person’s experience differs, sharing these insights may help others recognize similar patterns and seek appropriate testing and support sooner. If you suspect histamine intolerance, tracking your symptoms and noting their connection to specific foods can be a helpful first step. Consulting a healthcare professional knowledgeable in allergies and intolerance is crucial to developing a personalized management plan. Despite its challenges, understanding histamine intolerance has provided me clarity and a path toward better health and comfort in daily life.
