Magic the Gathering Foundations prerelease pulls

Building a deck for an MTG prerelease can feel daunting, especially when you're opening packs blind! It's not like constructed where you have access to everything. You're working with a limited pool of cards, which makes every decision crucial. My recent Foundations prerelease was a perfect example of this challenge and how rewarding it is to craft something strong from scratch. Here’s what I usually keep in mind when I’m sifting through my pulls. First off, the golden rule for Limited formats like prerelease is usually a 23/17 split: around 23 spells/creatures and 17 lands. This isn't rigid, but it's a great starting point. Your goal is to have enough creatures to apply pressure and block, enough spells to interact, and enough lands to cast them consistently. Don't forget that most prerelease packs give you a special promo card, which can often be a powerful 'bomb' that dictates your colors or strategy, like a Kiora, the Rising Tide or a Zimone, Paradox Sculptor if you're lucky! After sorting by color, I start looking for my 'bombs' – those rare or mythic cards that can win games on their own, like an Ajani, Caller of the Pride. These are often the cards you build around. Then, I prioritize removal spells. Can you deal with your opponent's big threats? Direct damage, exile effects, or even bounce spells are vital. Next up is synergy. Do your cards work well together? For example, if you have a lot of artifacts, cards that benefit from or interact with them become much stronger. Also, consider your mana curve. You want a good mix of low-cost cards to play early and higher-cost cards to close out the game. Having cards like Homunculus Horde, which can be a decent mid-to-late game threat, fits well into many curves. Typically, you'll want to stick to two colors. This keeps your mana base consistent and reduces the chance of getting 'color screwed.' Look at which two colors have the most playable cards, the best bombs, and the most removal. Sometimes, you might have a super powerful card in a third color – a 'splash.' If you have enough mana fixing (like lands that tap for multiple colors, or artifacts that add mana of any color), you could consider splashing for that one game-winning card. But be cautious; a greedy mana base can cost you games. Once I've narrowed down my main 23 spells and 17 lands, I like to do a quick mental 'playtest.' Imagine your opening hand, turn 1, turn 2, etc. Does it feel smooth? Do you have answers? Are you presenting threats? Don't be afraid to make cuts, even if it's a card you personally like, if it doesn't fit the deck's overall plan. Sometimes, a seemingly weaker card that fits your curve or synergy better is stronger than a powerful but off-color or clunky card. The key is to be flexible and adapt to what your packs give you. Finally, remember your sideboard! All the cards you didn't put in your main 40 are your sideboard. After game one, you can swap cards to better counter your opponent's strategy. Did they play a lot of flyers? Bring in more reach or flying defense. Are they graveyard heavy? Look for graveyard hate. This is a crucial part of maximizing your chances in a best-of-three match.
