Read a book, watch TV, or just sit quietly so they get used to your presence and scent. When you offer treats, try to use a flat palm to avoid looking like a predator's claw. You can also try a 'chinchilla-safe' playpen in a small, secure room. Let your chinchilla explore while you sit on the floor, offering a hand for them to sniff or climb on if they choose. Never force interaction; let them come to you on their own terms. Providing a cozy wooden hideout within their play area can also make them feel safer during these out-of-cage sessions. Another tip I've learned is to establish a routine. Chinchillas thrive on predictability. Feed them at the same time every day and try to have your bonding sessions around the same time too. This helps them anticipate your presence as a positive event. Also, ensure their environment is stimulating. A clean cage with plenty of chew toys, ledges, and a dust bath helps keep them happy and reduces stress, which can indirectly contribute to better bonding.
