Alright who out there is obsessed with Minecraft? My boyfriend and I have a world on his Ps5 and we have been grinding like crazy. We just found a cave spider spawner and today I plan to make an XP farm, with that in the mine shaft and above ground by our house. Each day i tell him I don't know what to do anymore and i don't think I wanna play but somehow he convinces me. Like today by suggesting making an XP farm. Like dang it okay you got me. I'll do it. What's your favorite thing to do in Minecraft?? #minecraft#Gamergirl#lemon8diarychallenge

... Read moreIt's true, sometimes you feel like you've done everything in Minecraft, but then a new project pops up that reignites the spark! That's exactly how I felt when my boyfriend nudged me towards building an XP farm from the cave spider spawner we just found. If you're wondering how to get tons of XP quickly, especially in the early to mid-game, a spider spawner farm in a mineshaft is absolutely one of the best ways to get XP in Minecraft!
Why are these mineshaft spider spawners so great for XP? Well, unlike general mob farms, a spawner guarantees a consistent flow of enemies in a confined space. Cave spiders are annoying, yes, but they drop XP, string (hello, bows and fishing rods!), and spider eyes (super useful for potions!). Plus, finding one in a mineshaft means you've often got pre-dug tunnels to work with, which can save a lot of time. The one we found, located around coordinates -1587, -12, 142, is perfectly situated for a build.
So, you've found your spawner. What next? The first thing I learned is you need to clear a 9x9x3 area around the spawner, with the spawner block at the center. This gives the spiders room to spawn. My biggest mistake initially was not lighting up the surrounding caves – if other mobs are spawning nearby, it reduces the spawn rate at your spawner! Remember to place torches down while clearing, then remove them strategically to encourage spawns.
Next, you need to get those spiders into a killing chamber. The most common and efficient method is a drop chute. For cave spiders (and most mobs), a 22-block fall will leave them with just half a heart, allowing you to one-hit them with your fist or a sword for maximum XP. I usually dig a tunnel from the spawner chamber to a central drop point, then dig straight down 22 blocks. At the bottom, create a small collection area with hoppers feeding into chests. Water streams are key here; place water at the edges of your spawn chamber to push the spiders towards the drop chute. This can be a bit tricky to get right, ensuring the water flows correctly without blocking spawns.
Cave spiders have a nasty poison effect, which can be super annoying and even deadly if you're not prepared, especially when you're just starting out. Always bring milk buckets to cure poison! Another tip I found useful is to place a single block of water at your killing spot. When you stand in it, the cave spiders can't poison you, but you can still hit them. This little trick saved me countless emeralds from buying milk!
To make your farm truly one of the best ways to get XP, consider these optimizations. First, an AFK spot: find a spot about 24-32 blocks away from the spawner where you can stand to ensure consistent spawns without being too close. Second, enchantments! A sword with Looting III will increase item drops, and Sharpness V will make short work of the spiders. While you're grinding, think about having Mending on your armor and tools to repair them with the XP you're earning – it's a super satisfying feedback loop!
Building an XP farm from a mineshaft spider spawner might seem like a big project, but the rewards are totally worth it. The steady stream of XP makes enchanting, repairing, and just generally progressing so much faster. My boyfriend and I are already seeing huge benefits. What are your best tips for building a spider farm, or your favorite XP grinding methods? Let me know!
