Ghost dog

Hey everyone! I wanted to share a bit more about my process behind this ghost dog sketch, the one I'm calling 'Percy's Ghostly Trick.' I've always been fascinated by mythical creatures and the idea of friendly spirits, and that's really where Percy came from. I wanted a character that was a little spooky but also had a mischievous charm, hence the 'trick' part of the title! The concept of a spectral companion who loves a good prank just resonated with me. When I started this particular piece, I grabbed my trusty pencil and my favorite spiral notebook. There's something incredibly satisfying about the tactile experience of a hand-drawn pencil sketch. For Percy, I focused on creating that ethereal, ghost-like dog character. I made sure to give him those distinctive pointy ears, which I think add to his playful yet mysterious aura, making him seem both alert and ancient. His dark eyes were key – they needed to convey both ancient wisdom and a hint of mischief, like he's just pulled off a clever prank. I often start with the eyes, as they truly are the windows to a character's soul, even a ghostly one! One of the most fun and challenging parts was rendering his tattered, flowing body. To achieve that translucent, wispy effect, I experimented with different line weights and shading techniques. I used light, feathery strokes to suggest the edges of his form, and then built up very subtle layers of graphite for the areas that needed a bit more depth or opacity, without making him look solid. The goal was to give the illusion of transparency and movement, as if he's swirling through the air rather than standing still. It's all about building up subtle layers with your pencil to create that smoky, translucent effect. If you're looking to draw your own ghostly creature, I'd suggest focusing on dynamic lines and varying your pressure to get a sense of depth even with just one pencil – don't be afraid to let your lines be a bit uneven to enhance the 'tattered' look! This sketch is just the beginning for Percy. I envision a whole 'Percy's Ghostly Trick gallery' of his adventures. Imagine him playfully interacting with everyday objects, perhaps making a book float off a shelf or gently nudging a ball with his spectral nose. Or maybe even showing him alongside other spectral companions, creating a whole ghostly pack! Next time, I might explore him doing another 'ghostly trick,' like making objects disappear and reappear, or creating illusions that fool unwitting humans. It's a fun challenge to bring such an intangible concept to life on paper and explore the boundaries of a character made of pure spirit.
