Mount Rushmore/Custer State Park/Crazy Horse

This Midwest state truly is a gem for anyone interested in American history and stunning natural beauty. One question I often hear is about the proximity of these iconic sites. The wildlife encounters are something else entirely. Seeing those bison thunder down the road was both exhilarating and a little terrifying! Always maintain a safe distance and never approach them. They might look docile, but they can run incredibly fast (up to 35 mph, I learned!), and they are wild animals. Keep your eyes peeled for other creatures too, like pronghorn, deer, and burros. And let's not forget the awe-inspiring Crazy Horse Memorial. While Mount Rushmore is well-known, Crazy Horse offers a different, equally powerful experience, still being carved into the mountain. One of the most moving parts for me was learning about the detailed sculptures and stories in the visitor center. I was particularly struck by the 'Death Song' sculpture by Ernest Berke. It depicts a Lakota warrior, a member of the Miwa'tani Society, preparing for battle, sash pinned to the ground as a vow of commitment – a truly profound testament to their bravery and honor. All in all, South Dakota delivered an unforgettable blend of natural beauty, history, and a few valuable travel lessons!
